Cornelius Brown Dies
At Hospital In City
Wednesday Afternoon
Cornelius Brown, 73-year old
resident who lived at 1016 Wash
ington Street, died yesterday after
noon at 2:55, at Roanoke Rapids
Hospital, following an illness of
10-days. He was an employee of
Rosemary Manufacturing Co.
Mr. Brown was a member of
Pleasant Grove Church, near Jack
son. Funeral services were con
ducted there this afternoon at 4:30
by Rev. Hurley, of Seaboard, as
sisted by Rev. Paul Fields, pastor
of Rosemary Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Maggie Cox Brown; two sons, Joe
and Robert Brown, both of Ro
anoke Rapids; four daughters, Mrs.
W. A. Wright and Mrs. E. S.
Hasty of this city, Mrs. William
Cox of Jackson, and Mrs. Neil
Pittman of TarborO.
In addition to his immediate
family he is survived by two
brothers, B. F. Brown of this city,
and Noah Brown of Holland, Va.,
17 grandchildren and two great
grandchildren.

Dr. and Mrs. Joseph H. Norman,
of Bath. The wedding is to take
place in early summer.

Kermit Mason Is
Captain In Army
Kermit It. Mason, the son of
Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Mason of
931 Jackson Street, has been
promoted to captain in the army
at Camp Adair, Oregon. A grad
uate of Roanoke Rapids High
School in 1936 he received a com
mission in the Reserve Corps fol
lowing graduation from Ciem
son College in 1940. He command
ed a CCC camp until February,
1943, when he was called to ac
tive duty and sent to Camp Rob
erts, Calif. Capt. Mason is now
regimental adjutant at Camp A
dair.
Sandlin - Tillman
Hiss Mary Evelyn Tillman and
Lloyd H. Sandlin, of Jacksonville,
were married in a simple but im
pressive ceremony on Friday, Apr
il 23, at ten o’clock in the morn
ing, in the First Baptist Church.
The bride’s pastor, Rev. Gordon
L. Price officiated.
Miss Cynthia Askron, of Chicago,
Illinois, violinist; Miss Dorothy
Rice of this city, soloist, and Miss
Elaine Wise, of Dighton, Kansas,
organist, rendered a program of
nupital music.
The bride and bridegroom en
tered the church unattended. The
bride wore a suit of navy sheer
with matching accessories, white
gloves, and an orchid shoulder cor
sage. A smaller orchid characterized
her hat.
Immediately after the ceremony,
the couple left for a short unan
nounced wedding trip.
Out of town guests included: Mr.
and Mrs. L. W. Maynard and fam
ily, Mrs. D. C. Young of Cary;
P. W. Tillman of Fayetteville;
Miss Nellie Elizabeth Sandlin of
Jacksonville, and Miss Lois Mc
Neill of Rocky Mount.
Mrs. Sandlin is the daughter of
Mrs. Alonzo Robt. Tillman of Cary
and the late Mr. Tillman. She
was graduated from East Carolina
Teachers College and is head of
the Home Economics Department
of the Roanoke Rapids Junior and
Senior High Schools.
Mr. Sandlin is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. R. J. Sandlin of Jack
sonville. He was graduated from
East Carolina Teachers College, and
is science instructor in the Roan
oke Rapids Senior High School.
Miss Virginia Wheeler spent the
weekend in Jackson.

HRS. F. Y. HUX
IS HELD WED.
Dies At Home Of Son
Tuesday; Had Been A
Mill Employee 45-yrs.
Funeral rites were held Wednes
day afternoon at 4 o’clock for Mrs.
Fannie V. Hux, 62, from the home
of her son at 206 Monroe St. She
is the wife of W. R. Hux of this
city. Mrs. Hux died Tuesday, April
27th after an illness of about eight
weeks.
Mrs. Hux is a native of North
ampton County, having] been born
in Lasker in 1881. She has made her
home in this city for the past 45
years and has been an employee of
Roanoke Mill Co. She worked at
the mill just few weeks before the
time of her death.
Rev. Lester A. Tilley, pastor of
the Methodist Church, conducted
the funeral services and interment
followed in the Roanoke Rapids
cemetery.
Mrs. Hux is survived by her hus
band, W. R. Hux; one son, N. Pen
tly Hux; one grandchild, P. Nav
arro Hux and her daughter-in-law.

Corporal Eugene Taylor, son of
Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Taylor, 1021

innounced recently by his com
nanding officer, Capt. John S.

Sgt. Taylor is a member of
Company “C”, 48th A. I. R. 7th
Armed Division, and is at present
stationed “somewhere in the des
ert”.

Prayer Services
Are Being Held
Community wide prayer services
for men in the armed forces will
be held for the month of May in
the All Saint’s Episcopal Church,
with Rev. Edmund Berkeley, the
pastor of the Church, preaching
the sermons. They will be held
Tuesday night at 7:30 until 8:00.
The public is cordially invited to
attend, and pray for those whom
the services are being conducted.
