Local Civic Clubs, both men and women, Churches, Ministers and others who are constantly saying that there should be something done to provide recreation and supervision for the Teen-Age girls and boys of our city, should im mediately go to the nearest book store or magazine rack and buy or borrow a copy of the May 19t/S Readers Digest. Turn care fully until you come to page Jj.3, then take your time and read “Trouble on the Street Comers,” condensed from “Common Senses" by Eleanor Lake. ALL PARENTS IN ROANOKE RAPIDS SHOULD READ IT. But of course you will say, “I’m so glad it is not happen ing here"—But anyway read the article. The Veterans of Foreign Wars are doing a wonderful job of pro viding recreation for young and old on the week-ends. Every Sat urday night from 8 p. m. till midnight the Veterans have a real square dance at the local Armory. With members of the Post on hand at all times the dances are carefully supervised. When you meet honky-tonk competition with a well planned program then delin quency takes a back seat, but unfortunately the Veterans of For eign Wars can only have their program on Saturday nights. Received a very nice letter form Sgt. Ivey Cobum who is in the Army Post Band at Napier Field, Dothan, Ala. Ivey is playing base ball down there, and was telling about the pitching of Lee Gris som-- former major leaguer who is in the Army at Camp Rucker. Many will remember Ivey, he for merly worked with Rosemary Mfg. Co. and played with Jay Sanders Rosemary Band. Every letter that this column receives from different boys in the Armed Services at home and abroad always start off with the big question “Hows the Roman cos ?’’ Will they have a good team this year? How many boys are still there? Well! boys, here’s the answers to a lot of the above questions. The Romancos will have a club this season, how good or how bad is still a big question mark, Russ DeBerry is still with the club. From the 1942 State and Regional Champions there still remains the following boys: Grady Wheeler 3b, “Speed” Hux out fielder and pitcher, Robert Rogers the star of the State Tournament last year, Lefty Everett, the de pendable first baseman; Chet Alls brook, the veteran second sacker; Ronnie Everett, the catcher last year, who is now in the outfield; Red Hansley, the flashy short centerfielder; Lefty Boyd, who also played in the outfield and a big flock of newcomers from all over town seeking berths on the team. Ace Carlysle, of the 1942 team will probably be out later on. So don’t worry fellows, personally, I think the Romancos will be just as good if not better than last year. Sh! Sh! Sh!—There’s a new Civ ic organization in the city. The Professional and. Business Woman’s Club has been organized and will have its Charter Night Banquet on May Hfth—or sometime around that date—watch your local news paper. Miss Minnie Johnson of Rosemary Manufacturing Co. has the honor of being the first Pres ident of the new club. It is an International organization and wo men who are intending to make Lions, Kiwanis and Rotarys step lively to match their civic interest.
