A ./ 1 '■ . i / FATHER AND SON CHARGED WITH CRIMES A Negro father and his son are being held in connection with a charge against the son of break ing and entering a bedroom in the night time with intent to commit a felony. The father is charged with attempting to intimidate a State’s witness. John Brown, the son, is in the county jail at Halifax where he was placed without bond on the charge that he broke into the bedroom of Helena Garner, colo red cook, who lives in a servants hopse back of the Reverend Til ley, 318 Jackson St. The arrest was made by policeman Jack Brig man after the girl had lodged a complaint. Later, Will Brown, the boys father, approached the girl and is charged with having threatened to do her harm if she testified against the son. A warrant was sworn out for his arrest on the charge of attempting to intimidate a State’s witness. The case will probably be tried at the next term of Superior Cto&rt which starts Monday. CITY DROV^jHNG VICTIMS Shown above are the two “teen-age youths” from Roanoke Rapids who were drowned last week. Troy Lee Dixon,(left) 15-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Dixon, 124 Madison St., lost his life while in swim ming in the Roanoke River on Sunday, August 1st, and his body was not recovered until the following Tuesday. Alfred Lee Harp, (shown in right photo) 18-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter E. Harp, 53-A Madison Street, was drowned at Slagle’s Lake, Emporia, Va., Wednesday afternoon about 4 o’clock while out boating with two feminine com panions. Both city youths would have reached their birthdays within a few days after their untimely accidents. Jenkins, Akers At Raleigh Meet And Conventions Mayor Kelly Jenkins and Tax Collector A. E. Akers are in Ra leigh this week where they at tended the convention of the Lea gue of Municipalities and the May or also attended the County Com missioners convention. C. H. the auditing firm of George Scott week making Another Sess'on Before New City Budget Is Ready The City Board of Commission ers met again Monday night to hear a report of the finance com mittee and to prepare the bud get for the coming fiscal year. An other session will be necessary be fore the new budget is adopted; Rising labor and material costs of most city departments is the problem facing the Commissioners as they try to make income and outgo balance. MIGHT CLOSE STORES YEAR 'ROUND HERE Grocery Merchants In Favor Of Yearly Wednesday Off Roanoke Rapids stores, at least certain classes of them, may take Wednesday afternoons off for the year ‘round as a result of pre liminary action taken this after noon at a meeting of the board of directors of the Roanoke Rapids Merchants Association. No formal decision was made at this after noon’s meeting, and it was voted to postpone definite action until a membership meeting of the as sociation, which will probably be preceeded by one or two group meetings. It was pointed out that most city food merchants were highly in favor of the Wednesday after noon half-holidays on a year ‘round basis, and that there had been a great deal of talk on the part of several other classes of merchants of closing their stores at noon Wednesday for the bal ance of the day 12 months out of the year. It was decided by the city re tailers that the association should continue the policy of good will advertising carried on by them for the past few years. Definite plans for the campaign will be worked out and explained at a later meeting. FESTIVAL IS DRAWING BIG CROWDS HERE The Roanoke Rapids Lions Club 7th annual Mid-Summer Festival, currently being staged at Simmons Ball Park, is attracting record crowds nightly, and indications are at this time that it will be the most profitable of any yet staged by the local civic club. All attract ions will play at the big midway through Saturday night at twelve o’clock, with the grand cash at tendance prize, $50.00 in cash, a warded at the conclusion of the week’s show. The W. C. Kaus shows are oc cupying the midway, and furnishing many shows, rides and concessions, which are said to please large au diences nightly. Thus far, everything at the fes tival grounds has moved along smoothly, with everyone attending reporting an enjoyable visit. Profits from the yearly ventures are used by the Lions in their work among the blind and underprivileg ed in the community, and indica tions that the money realized from this year’s show will eclipse all previous Festivals staged by the local Lions.
