B. Van Metts and General Jen kins, who will visit the city on a sort of “inspection tour” to decide where to es tablish such a unit. It has l>een learned from an authentic source that Roa noke Rapids is one of three cities in Eastern Carolina which is being favorably re garded by General Van Metts for the establishment of a home guard, and a decision will undoubtedly be forth coming from his office with in a few days after his visit lere tomorrow. General Van Metts is the Adjutant General of the State of North Carolina, as well as the head of the selective serv ice in the state. His visit to inspect the. local Armory, as well as acquaint himself with local conditions, has been looked forward to for some time, and local citizens are highly hopeful that a Home Guard unit may he establish ed here as a result of his tour of inspection. Immediately upon arrival in the citv lie will confer with Major Kelly Jenkins, follow ing which he will meet with other city officials and citi zens interested in the forma tion of a home guard unit here, and will later be a guest at a luncheon in his honor at a local restaurant. Pad Harris At New York Office Rosemary Sales Paul Harris, order and produc tion clerk at Roanoke Mills Co. No. 1 plant in the city, is spend ing two-weeks at the New York office of Rosemary Sales, selling agents for the textile division of the Simmons Company. Mr. Har ris handles the production orders placed by the New York office with the No. 1 plant, and it is thought he will gain valuable ex perience by the contacts he will make while in New York. .RECOMMEND J.T. CHASE ♦TO OCD POST The following letter was written by A. Leonidas Hux, Chairman of Halifax County Civilian Defense, just prior to his leaving Halifax ♦the first of the week to join the Merchant Marine: Mr. Norman Y. Chambliss Asst. Director of North Carolina Civilian Defense Rocky Mount, N. C. ♦Dear Mr. Chambliss: Pursuant to our conversation over the teelpphone yesterday, I have given much consideration and thought to the matter of recom mending someone to take over as ipChairman of Halifax County Civ ilian Defense, and thereefore, I heartily recommend Mr. J. T. Chase of Roanoke Rapids, N. C. for such Chairman. Mr. Chase is an outstanding man ?j|in this county, and he enjoys a splendid reputation. He is well qualified in every respect to car ry on the duties of Chairman, and I am sure that he will do a fine job. v With best wishes and kind per sonal regards, I am Yours very truly A. City Residents Will Register at 129 West 10th St. Registration of patrons of Hali fax County ABC Stores for their sales permit Book No. 2 will start on October 11th, according to an nouncement made this week by, , G. H. Johnson, chairman of the "bounty ABC Board. (In another I story appearing on an inside page,! it is stated registration will not start until October 15th, but this was based on information received u^earlier in the week by J. P. Little, “ncity manager of the ABC stores.) The registration place for people in Roanoke Rapids will be at the vacant store building at 129 West Tenth Street. ABC officials at first attempted to secure the- Ar nory as a regisration place, but there was no available space there. The registration beginning on October llth will be for white per ^ sons only! and will continue * "through October 16th, between the hours from 9 a. m. to 5 p. m. BROWN LT. LOUISE R. BROWN Above are two sons and one daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Brown, of 306 Madison Street, who are doing their part for the war effort in the nation’s armed forces. All are natives of the city, and graduates of Roanoke Rapids High School. Sgt. Allen Brown was inducted into the Army in May of this year, arid has advanced to the rank of sergeant in a comparatively short time. He is now stationed in Vancouver, Washing ton. Cpl. James Q. Brown, was inducted in October last year, and is at present stationed at Elgin Air Field, Florida. Lt. Louise K. Brown is in the nursing staff of the Army and is now serving in North Africa. CAMP BUTNER WAR CARAVAN WHICH VISITED HERE SOLD MILLIONS IN WAR BONDS Headquarters, 78th Lightning Division, Camp Butner. N. C., Oct. 7th—Lightning Division touring units participating in the recent Third War Loan Campaign have been credited with being largely responsible for the sale of $2, 642,447.50 in War Bonds, and, un officially, with another $2,000,000 sold in communities where smaller units of the 78th appeared under local sponsorship. Letters received this week by Major General Edwin P. Parker, Jr., 78th Division Commanding General, indicate the appreciation of the 12 communities visited by the 78th Lightning Division-Camp Butner War Bond Caravan on its tour of the eastern portion of the state. In each community on the itiner ary concerts were given by the Division band, and demonstrations of infantry and artillery weapons acqainted the citizens with the organization and duties of a mod ern combat Infantry Division. In several towns Lightning soldiers took part in the bond rally. Townsoeople showed their appre ciation to the soldiers with chick en and turkey luncheons, dances, free smokes, drinks and sand wiches. In a letter to General Parker, Norris Hadaway, director of pro motion for North Carolina, ex pressed appreciation "for your making possible the release of the very fine band and equipment to tour with the Caravan.” “You might be interested in knowing that the Caravan was re (Continued on Page 8—Sec. A) BPW CLUB IS Will Give To Service ipn To Use For 44 Bartering” The Roanoke Rapids Business nd Professional Women’s Club, vill exert every effort to collect old jewelry from residents of the city during the week of October 10th through 16th, and are deter mined to put the drive over in a big way. Jewelry collected will be sent to service men overseas for their use in “bartering” with na tives of foreign countries. Containers will be placed in all of the drug stores throughout the city for receiving jewelry which people wish to donate to the ser vicemen, and will be placed in other stores conveniently located. In addition, members of the local civic club will make direct soli citations to residents of the city. A spokesman for the club this week pointed out that they were asking for “trinkets” that were of practically no value to the givers, I but that the old discarded jewelry j would mean much to servicemen | when it was placed in their hands. PROCLAMATION As Mayor of the City of Roa noke Rapids, I do hereby design ate and proclaim the week of October 10-16, 1943, as National Business Women’s Week and ask the full observance of it by the whole public. Morton, pastor of the First Christian Church, Charlotte, is scheduled to start a week’s revival in the city at the Christian Church, starting on Mon day of next week. Rev. R. V. Hope is resident pastor of the church, and the public is cordial ly invited to attend the services, Which will last through Sunday evening, October 17th.
