THANK YOUR LUCKY STARS, •BIG HOLIDAY FILMUSICAL, I IS FEATURE AT THEATRES Rpens Mown town *or liristmas Day lowing [f you are looking for a gen ius dose of stars, it’s to be had the Peeples Theatre on Satur y and Sunday, next, then at the perial on Monday-Tuesday of ct week in the form of “Thank ur Lucky Stars,” gala holiday jfilmusical presentation at Roanoke ^tapids Theatres. Among other things, you’ll see the dramatic Bette Davis almost throwing a knee out of joint dur ing a jitterbug dance. She has ^ust finished a song about all the ^worthwhile men being in the I armed service with all that are left either too young or too old—"you either have to hold ’em off or prop ’em up.” Then up pops a gjive artist and chucks Miss Davis "ver his left shoulder, so to say. Ann Sheridan sings a song, and so does John Garfield. And who is that white-haired gent kicking up his heels like a vaudeville Roofer? None other than Alan wlale. Olivia de Havilland, Errol Flynn and Ida Lupino also raise their voices in song. In other words, just about every star and featured player on the ^Varner Brothers lot shows up for wl bit of a go in "Thank Your Lucky Stars.” Humphrey Bogart, with a three days’ growth of beard, tries to get tough and is backed out into the street by fat, Jtindly S. Z. Sakall. W “I hope my movie fans don’t hear about this,” whispers Toughie Bogart. And all through the entertain ment skips Eddie Cantor in a dual jrole—now as himself, and, again ™s a bus driver who can’t get a job in the movies because he looks like Cantor. Eddie is still able to carry a show on his shoulders. There are some swell tunes in “Thank Your Lucky Stars,” heaps of fun, and some dull stretches, too. ***** In a unique “switching policy” to afford both their uptown and downtown patrons the opportuni ty to see their special holiday bills, the Peoples plays "Girl Crazy” for their Monday-Tuesday bill on next week’s program. Additional de tails of this film) .... and it’s a honey) will be found on the op posite page. * * * * He “Hi Diddle Diddle,” which will be the Wednesday-Thursday film next week at the Peoples, is a crazy, sophisticated farce that throws reason right out of the window for the sake of laughs. There isn’t a serious moment in the entire film and the peppy pace doesn’t give the interest much chanc to lag. Aside from its excellent enter tainment, “Hi Diddle Diddle” also features in the cast, Pola Negri, star of yesteryear, who returns to the American screen after many years’ absence. Although Miss Ne gri’s role, that of a temperamental opera singer, is not unduly large, it is a showy one, and she per forms to a nice advantage. Adolphe Menjou plays a gay, charming scoundrel and man about-town married to Miss Ne gri, by whom he is supported. He gets a chance to try his bag of Action shots of the school for murder as pictured in the Cosmo politan magazine are shown above. At left is shown how students are permitted to cripple the instructor—if they are able. Second photo from left shows students tackling one of the many obstacles in the sta^md-ono half mile obstacle race which is an important part of their training Third photograph from left shows Lt. Col. D’Eliscu and a Ranger dens onstrating a Commando rope trick. Above is shown a field first aij station for casualties—of which there are many. tricks when Miss Burke tells him that she has lost her fortune to a swindler. In his efforts to re cover the supposedly lost fortune he gets himself involved in a num ber of compromising situations with the ladies. The fellow is prompted by the fact that his son (O'Keefe), who is a sailor, is mar ried to Miss Burke’s daughter (Miss Scott). After he has re covered the money, Menjou dis covers it was a gag. ***** “Deerslayer”, which has been se lected for the Friday-only bill on next week’s Peoples program, is a good out-door action picture, particularly suitable for children. Out-door fans will welcome it as an “indian picture”, in place of the more familiar Western villainy and outlawry. When Hurons descend on the peaceful Mohican and Delaware tribes, a Mohican princess, played by Yvonne de Carlo, is taken pris oner with the aid of a traitorous Mohican. Parks, to whom the princess is bethrothed, vows to res cue the one and kill the other. The white settlers also are attack ed by the Hurons and other cap tives are taken. With the aid of Kellogg, as Deerslayer, and War ren Ashe, as a frontiersman, the rescues, interspersed with plenty of action, are effected. The Hu rons are driven away by the or ganized settlers. Jean Parker, loved by Kellogg, is won by Ashe. * * * * * Inasmuch as Saturday’s film on next week’ Peoples program will be their New Year’s offering; that it will be one of the biggest pic tures of the year, and that we do not wish to “confuse” you with telling of so many films in one story, we will wait until our next week’s issue to announce the name of the attraction.
