He previous ly had been listed as missing in action. He died aboard a destroy er that w» junk in action with the en -iy. He was one of the iW13 survivors of a vessel that had been sunk at an earlier date. REPUBLICAN CONVENTION ,CALifDHERE The Republican convention for Halifax County has been "called by E. D. Dickens, chairman of the Halifax County Republican Exe cutive Committee, to convene on ,Jthe night of Tuesday, March 14. The meeting will be held in the Municipal building in Roanoke Rapids, beginning at 8 o’clock. The township conventions will be held on Saturday, the 11th. t$Each township convention will elect proper delegates to the coun ty _c .invention. Dickens urges all Republicans in the bounty to attent this con vention. \H SCOTT IS .ED IN ACTION it— In Louisiana / Corp. Willie L. Hasty, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willie L. Hasty, 920 Rapids Street, this city, is now in Louisiana. Willie graduated from the Roanoke Rapids High School before entering the service in August, 1943. He received his basic training at Camp McCain, Mississippi. His present address is: 847th Ord. Depot Co., APO 403-A, care postmaster, Shreve port, La. ARMY-NAVY TESTS HERE •AT R. R. HIGH SCHOOL ON MARCH 15TH FOR H. S. GRADS The third Army-Navy College ^Qualifying Tests for the Army Specialized Training Program and the Navy College Program V-12 which will be given throughout the country on Wednesday, March ^5, at 9:00 A. M., will be admin istered at the Roanoke Rapids High School, according to Thomas L. Martin, principal. A leaflet of general information which contains an admission-iden tification form may be obtained mt the local high school. This form properly filled out will admit to the test students between the ages of 17 and 21 inclusive, who are high school graduates or who jyiU be graduated by July 1, 1944. intent to take the test should be made known immediately to Thomas L, Martin in order that the necessary test supplies may be ordered. _ The same examination will be ™aken,. by both Army and Navy candidates. The examination is de signed toh test the aptitude and general knowledge required for the program of college training nnd all qualified students are Wirged to taike the test. At the time of the test each candidate will be given a choice of service preference, but taking the test does not obligate the candidate to enlist in the service. The Army Specialized Training Program is., aimed to meet the Army’s needs for specialists and technicians in certain critical field of study. Academic work is at the college level at government ex pense. The Navy College Program also enables students to continue aca demic training at government ex* pense. Successful completion of the prescribed courses may, fol lowing further officer training, lead to a commission in the Navy. Father And Son Banquet The Future Farmers of Ameri ca will hold their annual ban quet next Saturday night in the banquet hall of William R. Davie School. The time of the ban quet is set for 8 o’clock. Charles Wright will be toastmaster for the occasion. G. J. Wheeler is advisor of the FFA. --—-* Neal Calls Meeting For Tuesday At 8 L. S. Neal, chairman of the Red Cross war fund, announced today that a meeting of all “majors” and workers has been set for next Tuesday night in the Municipal building, beginning at 8 o’clock. At this meeting plans will be perfected for the coming cam paign which opens here on March 6. About 30 minutes of the session will be devoted to moving pic tures. “As the quota set for this dis trict is about $14,000,” said Mr. Neal, “it is important that Red Cross workers attend this meeting, which will be very instructive.” Rev. Gordon Price is chapter chairman of the Red Cross in this city. CHARGEDWITH TWO DEATHS ACUOIUlIlg tu <x lie wo OLVij- **'■"** Smithfield, H. M. Johnson of this city is being held under bond of $2,000 for his appearance in John ston County Superior Court on a charge of manslaughter, after a preliminary hearing in Recorder’s Court at Smithfield last Tuesday. Johnson, it is charged, was driv er of an automobile that randown and killed two pedestrians and in jured a third last Saturday night near Benson on highway 50. J. Dan Young and Penrose Webb, residents of Route 2, Ben son, both about 60, were killed as they were Walking along the high way, and Mancy Beasley, 43, suf fered injuries to his right shoulder and leg. All three were walking along the left shoulder of the highway, according to Beasley. Johnson was found guilty at the same hearing on a charge of transporting liquor and was given a road sentence. Bond covers both indictments. Johnson formerly lived in Johnston County before coming to Roanoke Rapids. Promotion And Medal Given Hawkins Boys Sgt. Russell D. Hawkins, who is stationed somewhere in England, with the 358th Engr. Regt., has been awarded the Good Conduct medal. Hawkins was inducted into the army at Camp Lee, Va., January 18, 1943. He received his basic training at Camp Claiborne, La. He has been in England since June, 1943. A younger brother, Paul E. Hawkins, Jr., who is also serving overseas, has been promoted to Private First Class, in Italy. Pfc. Hawkins, 18, received his basic training at Camp Croft, S. C. In November of 1943, he was transferred to foreign service in North Africa. He is now stationed The Hawkins brothers are the only sons of Mr. and Mrs. Paul IE. Hawkins of Route 1, city. LOCAL SCHOOL SALE OF ■, WAR BOND SALES COMES TO AN END WITH $31,481.85 -—■—* ‘ Sailing The Seas James W. Cannon, seaman isec ond class, United States Navy, son of Mrs. Rose Cannon, is now “sailing the seas.” Cannon is be lieved to be “somewhere in the Atlantic area. He volunteered for service in 19^2, and received his boot training at Bannbridge, Md. Cannon has been in active service about seven months and has seen some foreign action. Meeting Of Law Officers Here On 9th Edward Scheidt, special agent in charge of the Charlotte office of the FBI, announced here today that a conference of FBI and other law enforcement officers will be held in Roanoke Rapids on Thursday, March 9. The meeting will be held in the Municipal building on Roanoke Avenue. The program at this confer ence will be similar to that of other conferences which have been held in North and South Carolina, Mr. Scheidt said, and will con sist of a discussion on evidence by Mr. Scheidt; exhibition of the movie “Battle of Britain”; exhibi tion of slides of badly wanted lo cal fugitives and FBI fugitives of national interest. H. E. Dobbins, chief of police of Roanoke Rapids, said that he ex pected a large number of law en forcement officers to attend the meeting, coming from Halifax, Northampton, Warren, Vance, Wil son, Edgecombe, Nash, and Hert ford counties. License Revoked Clifton Turner of Roanoke Rap ids was among those whose auto mobile driver’s license was revoked by the North Carolina Highway Safety Division last week. County's Total OK But "E"s Lag The quota for Halifax Coun ty in the Fourth War Loan campaign just closes was $1, 334,000. The “E” bond quota was $552,000. Through Febru ary 22, $1,561,000 in bonds had been sold, thereby exceeding the overall quota by about $227,000. The “E” bond sales are off, however, by about $103,000. The sale of “E” bonds will con tinue for a few more days. The stamp and bond drive which ended February 18 was most successful for. the Senior High School. The drive was un der the direction of Miss Martha Rice and her 11-1 home room stu dents. The 28 members of this home room were organized in a most efficient manner and through this means canvassed the different rooms in Senior High school each morning and at 1:00 p. m. activity period to solicit the sale of stamps and bonds. The entire student per sonnel in Senior High worked with the 11-1 group and thereby the canvass was extended throughout the entire community. Hattie Mae Woodruff served as secretary for the drive and did an excellent joh of it. various activities were sponsor ed by different home rooms to boost the sale of defense stamps, which were used as admission to these different functions. Grades 10,, 11, 12 sponsored a basketball tournament of four games; 12-3 home room sponsored a moving picture in the auditorium; 12-2 sponsored a class party and sold stamps; Douglas Sanford from the 11th grade promoted an auction sale—our sincere thanks and ap preciation to the merchants who contributed the articles for this auction sale. A king and queen of hearts contest was promoted throughout the school by the 11-1 group. This group also sponsored the dance at the armory on Fri day night, which closed the cam paign. Special credit goes to John Cul lom and Joe Kidd for the excel lent job of making posters for the drive. The total sale of stamps and bonds for senior high school net ted $31,481.85. This money bfm been designated to purchase two Fairchild “Cornell” Trainer Planes^ 1 Jeep, 1 Life Raft, and 1 Para chute. The senior high school expreaa es thanks to very person who helped to make the drive such O success. H. E. Lee, county chairman, and F. H. Gregory, special chairman, are very appreciative of the ef forts of the school st dents for their great work during the cam paign, “and we wish to extend to them our sincere thanks.” ________- ..
