MCDONALD TO SPEAK MERE THURSDAY. APRIL 13 Dr. Ralph McDonald, candidate for Governor, will speak to the voters of Roanoke Rapids and Halifax County at the Municipal Building in Roanoke Rapids at 8 c^ilock, Thursday, April 13th. Dr. McDonald, known as the friend of labor and the schools, and the foe of sales tax, will bring the issues of the campaign before the people here and all men djjti women interested in liberal government are urged to hear him. C. C. Shell, local merchant and director of the State Merchants Association, will preside at the meeting and Dr. McDonald, a fAmer member of the State Leg islature, will be introduced by W. J. Norwood, also a former mem ber of the legislature. RECRUITERS HERE 2 DAYS THIS WEEK Lt. Margaret Pegram, Pfc. Cora McPherson and Pfc. Alga Kovacs will be at the Post Office in Roa noke Rapids today and Friday, 1 April 6 and 7, in tke interest of recruiting for the Women’s Army I Corps. Lt. Pegram stated that always before she has been pleased with ; ti$ re ponse from Roanoke Rap ! ids Women, and this time the re cruiters anticipate better results than ever. A woman who joins the army now has the opportunity of select ing whether she is to serve with Army Air Forces, Ground Forces or Service Forces, and may choose, also, the camp where she is to I serve. Two hundred and thirty nine different kinds of jobs are ncm filled by women in the army, and each new applicant may pick the job for which she is qualified. Neal, war fund chairman of the local Red Cross district, said this morning that $19,700 was “in sight” at this time. “I believe," continued Mr. Neal, “that we will get more than $20,000.” Final figures for the campaign could not be had this week, due to the slowness in which the reports are coming in, but Mr. Neal hopes to be a ble to give this information at an early date. McDonald Stores Remain Open On Monday It was announced today by Mrs. Blair Gibson, secretary of the Roanoke Rapids Merchants Asso ciation, that the stores of the city will be open as usual next Easter Monday. There will be no holiday this week-end. BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS HOLD MONTHLY MEETING Upe regular monthly meeting of the Board of City Commissioners was held last Tuesday afternoon in the commissioners’ room in the Municipal Building. Those present were Kelly Jenkins, Mayor; A. N. Ms#in, V. E. McDowell, R. L Starke and W. P. Taylor. The most important matter be fore the commissioners was the appointment of officials for the J^election to be held on Tues May 2, for the puropse of ing two city commissioners. ’ ve: North Ward—registrar, Burton; judges, J. I. Starke and M. D. Collier, 'present commissioners, which will expire in June of this year. No candidates have as y et filed for the posts. J. F. Glover complained to the board about the city garbage dump, alleging that it is a breed ing place for flies and mosquitoes, and also that the smoke and odor from the ruins were very offen sive to the residents in that sec tion. Mur phy, son of Mrs. Etta B. Murphy, 1016 Burton St., and the late W. J. Murphy, who is “somewhere in England.’’ Luther is a mechan ic in the Army Air Corps, and received his basic training in New Orleans, La. His wife is the former Miss Hilda Poindexter of this city. ■ 18 HORSES AIDES IN NEW CLASS Capping Exercises for another class of Red Cross Volunteer Nurses’ Aide Corps will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, Thursday night, April 13th at 8 o’clock. This is the class which has been instructed by Mrs. Fred Kroncke and caps and certificates will be awarded to Mesdames Elsie Louise Bushal, Lois Crumpler, Lucy Ma rie Ellis, Hubert Speight and Miss es Mary Sybil Allen, Elizabeth Brown, Virginia Christine Bush, Sara B. Cannon, Celia Dail, Alice Garner, Mildred Hodges, Mildred Jenkins, Margaret Moore, Marie Riggan, Corriane Satterthwaite, Betty Green Simpson, Mary Rach el Smith, Annie Reese Spivey. Dr. John Martin will preside at the ceremony and the address will be given by the Rev. Edmund Berkeley. The caps will be pre sented by Mrs. Kroncke and the Red Cross certificates by Mrs. Louise Starke. The public is cordially invited to attend the exercises. Urge Members Attend Meeting All members of the Business and Professional Women’s Club are asked to attend the dinner meet ing Tuesday evening at 7 in the Blue Room of the Rosemary Cafe. This meeting will be shortened in order that those who so desire, may attend the Kiwanis minstrel. Members who are unable to attend shouW^c^^Mra^P^JC^^yk MESSAGE RECEIVED BY HIS PARENTS YESTERDAY; WAS IN ITALIAN FIGHTING AREA ■ Private First Class Robert L. Bryant, 21-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Bryant, of Roanoke Rapids, Star Route, is reported missing in action in Italy, accord ing to a message received yester day by his parents. The telegram from the War De partment read as follows: “The Secretary of War desires me to express his deep regret that your son, Pfc. Robert L. A) ROTARYCLUB HELD MEETING LAST TUESDAY The Roanoke Rapids Rotary Club held its regular weekly meet ing Tuesday at noon in the Rose mary Blue Room. The meeting was well attended by the mem bership, and was presided over by President Joe Suitter. After routine business had been dis posed of election of club officers for the year was held with the following results: President, William White. Vice-President, William China. Secretary-treasurer, Mack Sav age. Directors: Fr. Peter M. Denges and William Taylor. Mr. Taylor has been a director the past year and was therefore re-elected, while Fr. Denges, who served as vice president, but requested that his name not be considered for the presidency due to his being absent from the city on occasions, was named to the board of direc tors by the members. Mayor's Court Since the increase in value of ABC coupons from one-half pint to one full pint, apparently the police are having a busy time with “drunks.” There were 19 cases before His Honor, Mayor Kelley Jenkins, in the Monday session of the court. Of these 19 one was for speeding, another for fighting, and 17 for public drunkenness. Good Conduct/ i '1—^——i mum'i Pfc. Banks Closed Next Monday According to an announcement made today the banks of the city Will be closed all day next Easter Monday. MERCHANTS ASSOCIATION HOLDS SPIRITED MEETING The Roanoke Rapids Merchants Association held a spirited meeting in the Rosemary Blue Room Tues day night. The meeting was call ed by President H. S. Loy who presided, and was in the nature Of an "experimental” session for the purpose of determining wheth er the members of the association wanted to hold meetings once a month and whether or not the association was going to be made to function as a strong organiza tion working for the common good of all merchant members and to ward a greater Roanoke Rapids. President Loy sent out the call for the meeting and told the 32 members present that he was ••tlp.nlv Several merchants present ex pressed In no nucertain terms a desire for the organization to con tinue functioning as a strong or ganization, and deplored the fact that so many of its members had adopted “the don’t care” attitude of attending the sessions of the body. With an estimated population of 80,000 in the Roanoke Rapids trade area, President Loy said it was time for the merchants of this city to start post-war planning. “We are far behind industry and highways in this area in doing this, but it is not too late,' jf we
