Maddrey, of this city has been appointed a mem ber of the Public Relations Com mittee of the North Carolina Med ical Society. The appointment of Dr. Mad drey to this important committee was made last week by President Whitaker of the Medical Society and official notification was made in the following letter from Ros coe D. McMillan, M. D., Secretary and Treasurer of the Society. The letter follows: "This is to officially notify you that President Whitaker, after consideration, has selected you as a member of the Public Relations Committee, which is composed of four outstanding physicians. “We hope that the year’s activi ties in this work will not be too burdensome. THOMAS IS WOUNDED IN NORMANDY Petty Officer s/c John Primm Thomas, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Thomas, Sr., of Weldon, is re ported as being wounded in action during the invasion of the Nor mandy Peninsula. The message was sent to the parents by the War Department Tuesday night of this week. No details were given. Thomas, who entered the Navy in May, 1943, was a member of the Amphibious Corps, and, there fore, was right in the "thick of the invasion” of the French coast. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas, who have been residents of Weldon for about eight years, have another son, Corp. C. B. Thomas, Jr., who is now stationed “somewhere” in England. TWO FIRMS IN VIOLATION OF OPA CEILINGS According to information re ceived today from the Raleigh district office of OPA, Theordore S. Johnson, director, two firms in Halifax County have violated OPA ceiling prices. The firms named are the Peggy Ann Shoppe of Roanoke Rapids and the O. L. Currin Dry Cleaning Cofnpany of Littleton. Pen dleton (0-358127) of the Army of the United States, has been award ed the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious services at Bougan i" '. "■» . ...... i ville, Solomon Islands, according to a letter received by his wife, Mrs. Olive Pendleton, from Lieut. Gen. M. F. Harmon. The action in which Lieut. Pen dleton participated and was wounded occurred on February 4 of this year. Aggressively leading a combat patrol, he surprised a Japanese force, killing two of the (Continued on page 8, Sect. A.) Club Members Go ro Charlotte For State Convention Five Roanoke Rapids Lions Club members attended the four-day state convention of Lions Inter national held last week in Char lotte. Those attending were Sam Smith, Garland Wyrick, Morris Clary, Dot Bennett and Graham Lynch. The Roanoke Rapids Lions Club won the coveted award for Dist rict 31-C, the Lions “Activities" trophy. The local club has won this cup in several previous years of competition. One of the highlights of the con vention was the White Cane lun cheon held in the Hotel Charlotte ballroom at 12:30 P. M. The lun cheon was delayed somewhat by the unexpected numbers planning 1-/-V ^ _3 During the delay, the Lions and Lionesses waiting to get into the ballroom, began a spontaneous song session, with Lion Cullen Johnson of Lenoir directing. As soon as the delegates were seated, the “The Tailtwisters” col lected money for the State Asso ciation for the Blind by fining the visitors for various shortcomings. Lion Graham Lynch was fined 50 cents for reasons unknown, ac cording to Lynch. Lions Bennett, Clary, Wyrick and Smith could not be reached for their opinions. Three district governors were elected at the state convention. Jennings A. Bryson of Sylva was named governor of district 31-A with no opposition. John H. Kalte of High Point was elected gover nor of District 31-B, and Jesse A. Jones of Kinston was named gov ernor of District 31-C. Jones, an attorney at Kinston, (Continued on page 8, Sect A.)
