GIRL SCOUT NEWS i t —■ i. " i i Brownies Enjoy Overnight at the Hut: Perhaps the last overnights in the Hut during this season have already taken place, and this we regret, for the experience is one that most Scouts and Brownies enjoy. A group of Brownies who at tended Day Camp spent last Fri day night at the Hut which not even the downpour of rain de layed, except as Brownies wait ed outside the Hut for showers to cease. Singing, and various forms of impromptu dramatics served as entertainment during the evening. However, it must be admitted that the most important event was the selecting of a spot for the “bunk” and preparation for bed. Blanket rolls were placed, per sonal belongings located and be fore dark a number of Brownies had crawled in! . . . But not to Senior Scouts Margaret Brown, Patsy Smith, Louise and Frances Coyle found this experience with Brownie Scouts a rare one and one they will never forget. As the rain was still pouring the next morning, a very stylish breakfast was enjoyed around 9:15. Tables were set, and the “Brow nie Family” was soon enjoying a hearty breakfast which they had prepared with the help of their "elders.” Time just flew and almost before things were in order once more, a thing which is definitely expected of Brownies, parents, were arriving for their daughters and the stay at the Hut was end ed .. . and without getting to the cherished job — that of wash ing the front porch! Those present were Ann Bever ley Gates, Iris Faye Sullivan, Bet ty Jean Iver, Marian Rochelle Ivey, Edna Ann Spivey, Jeanne Gibson, Betty Wilson, Hariette Ad kins, Betty Bardin, Shirley Ann O’Melia, all of Troop 1; Margie Black of Troop 9; ^Gwendolyn Bennett of Troop 12; Estelle Greenberg and Bettie Jean Cul lom of Troop 13. X * X X Girl Scouts Spend The Night at Hut: On Monday night a group of y Girl Scouts arrived at 7 p. m. to spend a night at the Hut. Their first job was to gather tinder for breakfast fires in order that it be dry and ready for use. When all was finished and the Scouts settled down to the main program for the occasion, the field of International Friendship was introduced, materials were spread out, magazines on hand and each Scout soon chose a country that interested her in order that she begin her own search for materials needed to complete the Second Class re quirements. One or two Scouts began a study on the World Knowledge Badge. Time slipped by so rapidly that it was bedtime before we knew it, and the usual preparations had to be made. Breakfast cooked out-of-doors was on time and even the clean up was on schedule. Once more Scouts began delving into the field of International Friendship. Countries which proved interest ing were China, England, Canada; Hawaii, Mexico, and Switzerland. At 10:30 a. m. Scouts went to the Public Library to setup their findings that other Scouts might take advantage of the research, and feel free to use the materials collected. Too, the Library, with its reference materials makes pos sible the completion of the Sec ond Class requirements and sev eral of the Badges if Scouts will avail themselves of the opportun ity. (From troop records this field of International Friendship is one of the few fields that a number of Scouts have not completed and the summer months might be a good time to complete it. Scouts taking part in the acti vity were Patricia Ann Johnson, Alma and Thelma Hancock, Reba Barnes, Mary Jo Suiter, Betsy Allen, Barbara Britton, Emily Biggs and Marie Roche. Those helping were Misses Louise Brown, Bettie King and Margaret Brown. * * * * Visit the Public Library! Scouts interested in the field of International Friendship should visit the Public Library during this month and take advantage of exhibits of materials on display. On the bulletin board will be found the requirements and all may be completed satisfactorily in the library. Scouts wishing to be tested on their work and receive credit for their study may report to the Hut on Monday afternoon at 3:30 or make arrangements for a time later during the week.
