year, according to a message re
ceived by his parents this week.
; Young Walker went into the
Army February 3, 1943, and re
ceived his basic training at Fort

there until he was sent overseas
in January of this year. Prior to
entering the Service Walker wa;

facturing Company. Mr. and Mrs
Walker have another son. Seaman
2/c Robert W. Walker, who is
somewhere overseas. He has two
other brothers and one sister at
home.
Pfc. Walker visited his parents
a few days just before going over
seas in January. He is a grand
son of Mr. and Mrs. John H.
Wrenn of Gaston and a nephew
of Mrs. J. M, Harper'.
•Lions Festival
. All Next Week
The Roanoke Rapids Lion's
Club will present its eighth an
nual festival for six nights, be
ginning next Monday evening. Lo
cation for this year's show is at
Simmons Ball Park where it was
held last year.
The festival committee has been
working over time for several
days ironing out the last minute
jletails for this year's attractions,
•vhich despite wartime conditions
bids fair to be the best and larg
est yet staged by the local Lions.
The W. C. Kaus Shows have been
engaged for the midway and it
is reported they have several new
"^ides and many other new feat

Meeting In Wilson
According to a letter received
this week by Dr. John W. Martin,
chairman of the Halifax County
Democratic Executive Committee,
a meeting of all county chairmen
and precinct committeemen of the 1
second Congressional District wil
be held in Wilson next Tuesday,
October 17, at 2:30 P. M. It is
expected that Gregg Cherry, Dem
ocratic nomilnee for Governor, and
Clyde R. Hoey, senatorial nomi
nee, and other state candidates
will be present Dr. Martin urges
all precinct chairmen to make
arrangements, if possible, to at
tend this meeting.

ft Charlie was home for a short visit last Augnst and has made four
sea trips since bejiig "shipped out" from New York in the latter part
of October, last year. He was educated in Roanoke Rapids and Gas
ton Schools. On the right is Private Robert L. Bryant, 22, who went
into the service in 1942 and was last home in Jane, 1943. Robert was
reported missing in action in March of this y«*r, but it was later
learned that he was a prisoner of War in Germany. Proof of this was
^ received last week by his parents in the form of a card written in hi»
own hand writing.

received word this week that
their son, Pvt. Harry T. Whit

in Germany. The message
came from the War Depart
ment. Pvt. Whitby, who enter
ed the service in August, 1943,
and was sent overseas in June
of this year, was reported as
"missing in action" in France
on, July 19.

Farm Bureau
To Hold Meet
Friday Might
A meeting of the Halifax Coun
ty Farm Bureau will be held Fri
day night (tonight) at William
R. Davie School. The meeting has
been called by C. S. Alexander of
Scotland Neck, secretary of the
bureau, aind Mrs. V. I. Hockaday
of Roanoke Rapids will be tem
porary chairman. It is expected
that state officers of the Federal
Farm Bureau will be present and
that one of them will be the prin
cipal speaker of the evening. The
meeting will begin at 8 o'clock.
