Roland Bailey, 19-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence , :'$ailey, 1023 Henry street, Roanoke /• 'Rapids, is reported miss'-'g in action on September 29. Th s is • the second time that young Bai, -v has been reported “missing.” The first was on August 27, but a few \t^.ys later was found. This time, however, no word has been re ceived from him. The message re porting his being missing was re ceived this week from the War Department by his parents. f>Pfc. Bailey entered the service August 23, 1943, received his basic training at Camp Gruber, Okla. He was home for the last time before going overseas in February J of this year. Bronze Star, Purple Heart £iven Sadler For heroic conduct on the field of battle, Corp. Raleigh B. Sadler has been awarded Bronze Star Medal and he has also received -±he Purple Heart for wounds re V^eived recently in France. In a letter to his wife Corporal Sadler stated that after having been once captured by the Germans he etf , . caped and is now back on the bat 41 e front. Awarding of the Bronze »tar and Purple Heart was made known to his wife here in a letter she received from the War De partment. -- *Back In States Pvt. Clyde Pulley, who has been in a hospital somewhere in Eng land, recovering from wounds re ceived in action in France on Aug. 01, has arrived safely in Charleston, S. C., and is now in the Stark General Hospital. Pvt. Pulley is expecting to be home soon with his family and friends. ‘Negroes Face Judge Today Pedro Davis, Eddie Bellfield, ^alias Eddie Davis, and “Baldy” •Lashley, all negroes, will face Magistrate’s Court this afternoon, charged with assault with a dead ly weapon with intent to kill. The alleged fight is said to have oc ^curred last Saturday night at •Simmons ball park where the Lions Club festival was in progress. —-— ..., Baker Resigns ■From Penny's_ # H. E. He will be suc ceeded here by John H. Roland Bailey, above, has been reported “miss ing in action.’’ Joins The Waves, v Pictured above is Miss Edith Li. Edwards, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Edwards, 1006 Jackson Street, who will leave next Wednesday for Raleigh to be inducted into the Waves. Miss Edwards will train at U. S. S. Hunter College, Bronx, New York, for six weeks. After this training period she will be assigned to a Naval Hospital. Miss Edwards is a sister of Lt. Daniel P. Edwards of the Air Corps. Saturday Last Day to Register Dr. John W. Martin, chairman of Halifax County Democratic Ex ecutive Committee, issued a final warning today to those who have not registered and thereby be coming eligible to vote in the elec tion in November, will have to do so this coming Saturday, as this will be the final day of registra tion. For your information the fol lowing are the places where you can register in each precinct in Roanoke Rapids: Precinct No. 1—Boy Scout Hut on 2nd Street, Henry Fitts, Regis trar. Precinct No. 2—Fire Department, Municipal Building, Bruce Camp, Registrar. Precinct No. 3—Rosemary School Mrs’. Dorothy Hardy, Registrar. Precinct No. 4—Medlin’s Store, South Rosemary, Hannibal Shear in, Registrar. Young Man Beaten Up After Charqinq He Lost His Money Charging that he had been' “gyped out of his money” one night while playing a game on the midway at the carnival which played in Roanoke Rapids last week, Charlie Chappell, young Weldon white man, went to the hotel where the management of the show was staying, and is said to have demanded his money back. Upon refusal, Chappell, it is alleged, went to his home and secured a shotgun and returned to the hotel where he created quite a scene when he fired the gun into the wall of the building. He was placed under arrest on sev eral charges, most serious being assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest. He will be tried in Recorder’s Court on November 14. Sam Palitz, a member of the carnival group, is at liberty under $200 bond for his appearance in court on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and assault with a deadly weapon. It is alleged that Palitz struck Chappell on the head with the butt of a pistol while he was handcuffed after being ar rested by Officer Ward of the Weldon police force. Chappell, it was said by the po lice, received a severe beating from various members of the’ carnival crowd. Grooms Wounded Mrs. J. A. Grooms has received word that her grandson, Pfc. Hay wood Grooms, was wounded in France, and his wife has received the Purple Heart He is how iii England in a hospital. Message Received Tuesday From The War Department, Killed In Action v Pictured here is Pfc. Gilbert Lee Walker, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Walker of Little ton, who was reported as being killed in action Sept. 15, in France. Returns To His Ship In Atlantic Sl/s Charles L. Gordon has re turned to his ship somewhere on the Atlantic Coast after having spent six days here with his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Gordon, 319 Henry Street. Charles enter ed service April 23, 1943, and has made four successful trips over seas. While here hfs uncle, Pvt. Audley Collins of Belmont, was on leave. They had not seen each other since entering the service. Young Gordon attended Roanoke Rapids High School and was form erly employed by Roanoke Mills No. 1. Lieut. Edwards Visiting Parents Lt. Daniel F. Edwards, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Edwards 1006 Jackson Street, arrived Tues day morning from San Angelo Texas, for a visit with his parents Lt. Edwards recently graduated from a bombadier school and aftei his leave has expired he will re port to Barksdale Field, Shreve port, La. District No. 7 PTA Meeting. District No. 7 of the North Caro lina Congress of Parents anc Teachers, comprising Halifax Nash .Edgecombe, and Northamp ton counties, will meet from 1( A. M. until 1 P. M., Friday, Oct ober 27, in the Enfield School. Principal speakers will be Mrs Charles E. Roe, of Chicago, 111. national field representative; Mrs J. W. Burke, executive secretar; of the State Congress; and C. W Phillips, director of public rela tions for the Woman’s College ii Greensboro and president of Stat Congress. Pfc. Robert L. Harris, of the ^.United States Marines, 21-year-old son of Mrs. Octavia Woodruff of Gaston, is reported by the War Department -as having been killed in action on Palau Island in the South Pacific area. The message was received by his mother last Tuesday. Young Harris, who lived here for about three years before en tering the service, attended Wake Forest High School and volunteer ed for the Marines in September, 1942. He was formerly employed by Roanoke Mill No. 1. After going into the service Pfc. Harris never came home on* fur lough. He received his basic train ing in San Francisco, Calif. The information from the War Depart ment gave his death as October 1ft Lt. Benton Is i Visiting Here Lieut. M. S. Benton, USNR, ar I rived in Roanoke Rapids for a 30-day leave in the states. He is with his wife, the former Miss Katherine Hall, and his mother, Mrs. H. C. Benton. Lieut. Benton entered the service September 1, 1942, and has been overseas in the I Pacific area for nine and one-half months. Asked as to how he felt on reaching home, Lieut. Benton, said: “It was sure the prettiest place on earth to me.” After his leave is up he will report back to the West Coast for further orders. Camp Boss Badly Hurt In Accident R. M. Wise, foreman of the pris on camp at Jackson, was badly injured last Friday afternoon about 6 o’clock, near Garysburg. The accident occurred on Highway 1S8 when a large transfer truck, it is said, ran into and completely de molished the truck in which Wise, two guards, an overseer and 14 prisoners were riding back to camp after the day’s work. All the men were brought to Roanoke Rapids Hospital and after first aid treatment were re leased with the exception of Mr. Wise, who is said to be still in a serious condition. The driver of the transfer truck was placed under bond pending a court hear- / ing. Crouch Brothers Visiting Mother Pfc. Troy Crouch of Douglas^ Ariz., is- visiting his wife and mother, Mrs. L. B. Crouch, far twenty days. He entered service in 1942. His wife is the former Miss Nora Wright of this city. Mrs. Crouch’s other son, Pfc Cacy B. Crouch, came in this week 'rom overseas duty. He entered service in 1941, and has been across since 1942. He has been in New Zealand and was among the . first American Soldiers to arrive , there and says they were treated . grand by the people in that coun - try.
