Home Economics Teachers Begin Duties Here Early Miss Martha Rob Cherry, form er vocational Home Economics teacher, and Miss Evelyn Gwalt ned from Hiddnite, N. C., vocation al Home Economics teacher, and new in Roanoke Rapids this year, have started work for the school year. The vocational teacher has a varied program including: pupil in struction, direction and supervis ion of student Home Projects, conducting adult classes, if com munity is interested in having such a program; and participation in other community activities which have as their purpose the betterment of home living. The class room instruction includes: training in child development, family relationships, better buying, Home Deauuncauon, 11ea11.11, pei sonality development, foods and nutrition, clothing and other re lated units in Home Living. When school is not in session, the teachers devote their time to visiting, community activities, im provement of Home Economics Department, planning a program of work for the year, supervision of home projects, and teaching adult classes. Miss Gwaltney and Miss Cherry will be glad to give any assistance to anyone if they will call the high school. Lieut. Dickens Is Back From Europe First Lieut. Fletcher P. Dick ens returned last week from the European Theatre of operations and arrived in Enfield on Thurs day for a thirty-day leave. He and Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Nichols, Jr., are spending sometime at Virgi nia Beach with their families. Lonnie Vaughan "Plank Owner" •When the destroyer escort ves sel on which he is now serving recently celebrated its 1st anniver sary, Lonnie Thomas Vaughan, Ship’s Service and Laundryman Third Class, USNR, of 93 Jackson Street, was numbered among the “plank owners” of this Atlantic Fleet ship. Comprising about two thirds of the crew the “plank owners” are those men who served aboard the ship when she was commissioned into the Naval ser vice a year ago. SSML3/C Vaughan entered the navy on December 1, 1943, in Ral eigh, and was stationed at Bain bridge, Md., before he was placed aboard the ship he is on now, where he has been for the past fourteen months. He is the hus band of the former Mildred Odom, and she and their two children, Lonnie Alvin and Threasa, reside at 93 Jackson Street. He has two other brothers in service. They are Cpl. David Vaughan and Pfc. James W. Vaughan, both in the army. Prior to his entrance in the navy, Vaughan was employed by the Roanoke Mills Co. Wearer of the American and European Theatre ribbons, Vaugh an is also authorized to wear a bronze engagement star on the American Theatre Campaign rib bon for participating in the de struction of an enmy submarine.
