GARYSBURG NEWS Mrs. William Grant and son vis ited her mother, Mrs. J. H. Floyd, on Sunday. The Gaston Club met with Mrs. Robert Wray on Wednesday night with Mrs. Wray as hostess. F’riends of Mrs. Robert High are glad to know she is improving in the Roanoke Rapids Rospital. Mrs. L. A. Harris and children were visitors to Mrs. Blanche Wal ker recently. Mrs. M. C. Vincent and son vis ited her mother at Garysburg re cently. Marion Wilcox Is Guest Speaker , The guest speaker at the Pres byterian Church for the morning worship next Sunday is to be Miss Marion Wilcox, one of the Church’s Missionaries to China. Miss Wil cox is a most attractive and in spiring speaker. She was at work in China at the time of Pearl Harbor and was imprisoned by the Japanese for 19 weeks. She re turned to America on the Swedish liner, Gripsholm, and is eagerly looking forward to her return to China. The public is cordially in vited to hear this first-hand re port of Christian Missions in the Orient Miss Wilcox will also speak to the young people of the church on Saturday night at 7:30. All the young people of this city and of Weldon and Littleton are invited to hear Miss Wilcox that night. Open house will be held by the young people after the service. Albert Smith Is Commended For Entertainment Among the 2000 battle hardened \ veterans of the ETO that docked in New York harbor on October 11 on the “Rushville Victory” was Pfc. Albert Smith, formerly of this city, and of the Second Armored Division. Aboard the ship Smith 1 did an excellent job of assisting in i the entertainment of the men. His ; guitar melodies and songs brought ; cheers and applause from his fel- i low soldiers. , J. B. ENTERTAINS POW — •> The first radio broadcast to be witnessed by repatriated prisoners of war stationed at Santa Barbara, California, will be the Jack Benny show, heard over NBC, Sunday, October 14th. Above, Lt. Col. Burton R. Brown, recently released from Manchuria with Oen. Wainwrlght, extends the broadcast Invitation to Benny in behalf of the returned prisoners. The Benny program can be heard at 7:00 P.M., E.S.T. (With a repeat at 9:30 P.M. on the West Coast). Celebrates His 13th Birthday H. W. Cooper celebrated his 13th oirthday on October 15 at his tome on Jackson Street. Games .vere played and refreshments ivere served. Doyle, Mack royner, Christine Hall, Merline ilarpenter. Fine Arts Department Holds Monthly Meet The Fine Arts department of he Woman's Club held their Oet >ber meeting on Monday, with klrs. Edwin Knott and Mrs. Fred ironcke as hostesses. Mrs. Bahn ion Weathers, president of the dub, presided at the business ses sion. The usual procedure of busi ness was transacted. Under new business a discussion of the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra was presented for consideration and a donation was agreed on for the cause. The program was under the diri* ction of Mrs. Heath Lee and her subjeot was Modern Music and Composers, a most interesting presentation of the subject was made. A sweet course was enjoyed at the conclusion of the program. Six new members were welcomed to the club membership: Mrs. Paul Speas, Mrs. R. A. Miehie, Mrs. Zeb Denny, Mrs. I. E. Ready. Mrs. W. R. Stevens and Mrs. Blair Gib son. The club members answering roll call were: Mesdames R. P. Beck with, Jesse Harrell, L. D. Hines, Ed Knott, Fred Kronche, Heath Lee, Joe Tally, R. W.
