Troop 6 Appoints New House Committee: Bobbie Fisher reports that An nie Erwin has been appointed chairman of the House Committee, with Emily Biggs, Ann Bunn, and Mary Frances Allsbrook assisting. Reporters of the Intermediate Scout Troops invited Miss Amette VanDyke to meet with them and tell them something about how news is gathered, written up, printed and distributed. Miss Van Dyke said that all around them were things to write about and she gave them a simple outline—the FOUR W's and HOW —to follow when tney put me words down on paper. The Scouts learned that if the reporter omits one of the four W's (who, what, •where, when) or how, the news story is incomplete. She told them the next most im portant thing was to use simple words correctly and effectively. She cautioned them against using flowery descriptions. VTim. VanDyke told the scouts the meaning of some of the terms relating to type and equipment and confessed that the process of •printing was so fascinating that the first week on the job she couldn’t work for looking. The Scouts listened intently, wishing that they might have an opportunity to see for themselves “what makes the wheels go round.” Troop lk Witt Make Friendship Bags: Realizing that girls in liberated countries still need our help, Scouts of Troop 14 want to make simple drawstring bags out of gay material and fill them with such things as needles, pins, combs, soap, ribbon, buttons, pen cils, wash cloths, hard candy, and a toy for a child. Troop 14 is asking the other troops to help them collect these things. The Friendship Bags will be sent overseas as a token of friendship from the troops to girls in liberated countries. Each bag may carry the names and troop numbers of the senders. Troop 15 Takes Another Trip: While the Peter Pan Patrol was planning a troop celebration for Girl Scout Week, the Yellow Pansy Patrol visited Land Jewelry Store to learn something about the dif ferent types of glassware used in the home today. After showing the Scouts pic tures of the different types of glassware, Miss Singletary pointed out many fine examples in the store. Showing them a beautiful punch bowl she explained that it was made of pressed glass in -- v Fostoria’s Early American pattern, and that it was called pressed glass because it was poured into a mold and pressed into shape. The Scouts discovered that the process of etching glass is similai to stenciling. Miss Singletary told them that the color of the ruby glass was fired into it, and tha in making cloisonne the decora tion is set in enamel between wire fillets. The Scouts were very much impressed and their report to the rest of the troop aroused an in terest in the Glass Badge. TOWN TALK Mrs. Earl Daughtry is a patien' at the Roanoke Rapids Hospital.
