William Crawley I Is Discharged Pfc. William T. Crawley has been discharged from (he Army Air Forces. He entered the service in Aug. 1942, and was assigned to duty with, the Army Air Forces, as an M. P. His final assignment was at Eglin Field, Fla., headquarters of the Army Air Forces Proving Ground Command. A resident of Roanoke Rapids, prior to joining his country’s ser vice, Pfc. Crawley was employed by the Virginia Electric Power Co. He takes the heartfelt thanks end. appreciation of his country in separating from the Air Forces. 'Harvest Pay at Quankie Church Sunday, December 2, will be “Harvest Day” at Quankie Bap tist Church. There will be a guest speaker for the .occasion. Every member and friend of the church is urged to be present. Rev. E. W. Greene, of Hender son, is pastor. The first service will begin at 11 o'clock. Bunch ■wilL be served on the grounds. The afternoon service will begin at 2 o’clock. Recruits Go To Ft. Bragg Eight men, recruited through the Roanoke Rapids Army Recruiting Station, have gone to Fort Bmgg within the last two weeks for final examinations. Listed as new re cruits werei Samuel E. Sandeford and Charles L. Bowen, both of this city. World War II veterans who re enlisted were: Raymond Edward Scott, Talmadge E. Jones, Eli W. Forney, Willie E. Massey, Andrew J. Oman and Swept Snow. All of these men had previously received discharges from the service. S/Sgt. Swept Snow and T/4 Wil lie E. Massey are now enjoying a 90 day furlough at their homes for reenlistment. T/4 Massey serv ed 43 months in the army before reenlistment and served 16 months overseas in the European Theatre. While overseas he served in the Northern France, Rhineland, Ar dennes and Central Europe Cam paigns. He was with the 147th Armed Signal Co. He received his discharge from Fort Bragg on 20 October 1945, and reenlisted on the 20 of November. He has four Bronze Service Star3 to his credit. Bert Harwell Will Lecture Here Dec. 3d Bert Harwell, of New York, rep resentative of the National Audu bon Society, will lecture and pre sent “Outdoor Symphony,” featur ing a colored bird film, at the High School auditorium on Monday, Dec ember 3, it was announced this week. Mr. Harwell’s lectures combine a colorful presentation with his wide scientific knowledge, creating a most entertaining, as well as in structive experience. He is a mast er of anecdotes, delighting his audience by vividly recounting many of his own amusing and breath-taking adventures, and his bird song interpolations and whistling to his own piano ac companiment lift his program far above the ordinary performance. James Ritchell Killed in Action Mrs. James Ritchell of this city received word Monday from her husband’s step-sister, Mrs. Jane Davison, of Corpus Christi, Texas, Frank Butts 3s Back Home From Europe Sergt Frank W. Butts, son of Mrs. Anna Ward Butts, Roanoke Avenue, is back home from the Army with an honorable discharge. Butts entered the service March 10 1942, and served 44 months overseas, being attached to Gen. Patton’s Seventh Armored Division He saw action in France, Holland and Germany, and was m four major battles in Northern France the Rhineland, the Ardennes and Central Europe. Sergt. Butts wears four cam paign stars, the good conduct rib bon and the Purple Heart, which was awarded him for wounds re ceived in battle in the Rhineland campaign. . ,. A large cake decorated with’ candles and with the inscrip tions: “Welcome home, Frank, on one side, and “Happy birthday Jack,” on the other, was a feature of the dinner.___ ,hat ner husband, MMl/c James Roland Ritchell, was killed in act ion in the Pacific in August, 1944. Ritchell was formerly from Corpus Christi and was in the navy once before being called back after the war began.
