THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 1945 _SECTION B—PAGE 1 Enfield Town Board Favors Flood Control Enfield — Enfield Commission ers at a meeting held November 26 passed the following resolutions: WHEREAS it has been brought to the attention of the Commis sioners of the Town of Enfield that a survey has been made by Army Engineers, which survey ' shows that it is feasible to control the flood waters of the Roanoke Rjfer, by erecting a dam at Bugg’s Island, in Virginia, and at possible other locations south of that point on the Roanoke River, such engineering work pro viding adequate flood control for certain counties in Eastern North Carolina, Halifax County being among the number; Now therefore be it, . . RESOLVED by the Commission ers of the Town of Enfield in spec iij| meeting assembled November 26j 1945, that we hereby approve the proposed project and further recommend to our Representatives in the Congress of the United States, that all legal means be used in order that the waters of the Roanoke may be controlled, so that no further heavy damages will be sustained by land-owners and manufacturing plants. BE IT FURTHER AESOLVED that copies of these resolutions be forwarded to Sen ators Bailey and Hoey, and Con gressman Kerr of the Second North Carolina District. Halifax Zone yeetinef Held fhe Halifax Zone meeting of Woman’s Society of Christian Service was held at the Rosemary Methodist Church, November 14, at 10 o’clock. The meeting was called to order by the zone leader, Mrs. Ralph Rives, of Enfield. Mrs. Wm. L Knight, of Weldon, gave the devotional. Greetings were given by Mrs. W. R. Stevens. Response by Mrs. W. C. Coltrane of Raleigh, gave the addresses. Lunch was served by the hostess church at the Busi ness and Professional Club House at twelve-thirty. At one-thirty the meeting was opened for the after noon session by Mrs. W. E. Knight of Hollister, with a devotional. »s R. G. Willey, of Eden, gave report on the Seminar held at the First Methodist Church in October at Roanoke Rapids. Mrs. Fred L. Johnson of Con way District Secretary, led the question hour. Death Calls Mother of Rev. Deages Mrs. Flora Magdaline Denges, nee Weber, mother of Rev. Peter M. Denges, pastor of St. John's Catholic Church, of this city, died in Baltimore, Maryland, Friday night, November 23. She was buried from the Baltimore Cathedral, the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Tuesday morning, November 27, at ten o’clock. Her three sons, who are priests, officiated at the Solemn High Mass of Requiem. The cele brant of the Mass was Father Peter M. Denges, of Roanoke Rap ids; the deacon was Father Jos eph F. Denges, of Rock Point, Md., and the sub-deacon was Father Q. Benedict Denges, C. SS. R., of Tampa, Fla. The master of cere monies was the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Harry A. Quinn, pastor of St. Ann’s Church, Baltimore, and the sermon was delivered by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Joseph M. Nelligan, Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Town Talk Mrs. Andre DeShane and son, Kendall, of Elizabeth, N. J. has returned to their home after be ing guest of Mr. and Mrs. T. O. Wilson for a few days. Neal Benn is a patient at the Roanoke Rapids Hospital. Baltimore. In the sanctuary were several Bishops among whom was the Most Reverend John J. McNamara, D. D., Bishop of Baltimore and Washington; scores of monsignori, hundreds of priests and monks and nuns and brothers and sisters from Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, New York and Pennsyl vania. Among the honorary pall bearers were Frank J. Baure, state senator of Maryland, a nephew of the deceased, and the vice-presi dent of the Maryland Fidelity and Trust Co., Leonard Seims, a cous in of Mrs. Denges. Father Denges extends his heart felt appreciation to his many friends in this community who so thoughtfully remembered his mother by their Masses, Holy Communions, flowers, letters and cards of sympathy.
