'WHAT NEXT, CPL HARGROVE' IS HILARIOUS COMEDY TO BE SHOWN AT PEOPLES THEATRE » Of course you’ve heard about the movie to be shown at the Peoples starting Sunday and running thru Tuesday. None other than the Metro-Goldwyn Mayer sequence of the Private Hargrove films, entitl ed, “What Next, Corporal Har grove?” In the first picture Rob ert Walker proved so successful as America’s most laughable G. I. that .£\is studio brought him back by popular demand. Jean Porter is given the only feminine role in the picture, playing the part of the French mademoiselle. She is perfectly casted for the part, and very capably handles the roman tic end of the Corporal’s new ad ventures in France. Keenan Wynn completes the touch of perfection as the buddy of Walker. If you saw the first picture, then you’ll Jfciow what to expect and know lor sure you’re not gonna miss this one, and if you didn’t see it, then you’d better get on the ball because you’re really missing out on some excellent entertainment. Starting Wednesday: “This Love of Ours” is a dramatic tear-teaser starring Merle Oberon and Claude Raines, a film in which the fem mes will take special delight. f I “This Love of Ours,” recounts ow unjustified jealousy on the part of a doctor breaks up his happy marriage to a woman who worked as an entertainer. The husband won’t listen to an expla nation. He abandons his wife, tak ing with him their little daughter, whom he brings up to believe that her mother is dead. Chance re unites husband and wife after she has had years of tough going and heartaches. The daughter, told that the woman is her stepmother, turns against her, regarding her in the light of an intruder. From that point the film resolves itself into the drama of a woman’s bat tle to regain her child’s affection. PROGRAM FOR NEXT WEEK AT THE IMPERIAL Ester Williams and Red Skel ton play in “Bathing Beauty,” a technicolor return picture, on Sun day at the Imperial. Monday and Tuesday will be a comedy with a good amount of ro mantic to-do that will please any filmgoer, with James Craig, Fran ces Gifford and Ava Gardner as the stars. The name of the film is “She Went to the Races.” James Craig enters the picture as a race horse owner for whose affections Frances Gifford, one of a scientific party who apply pre cise mathimatical calculations to the business of winning horse races, and Ava Gardner, fashion able heart stealer, as rivals. The girls have a nip-ana-tuck battle through out the entirety of the picture. You can see the movie and find out who finally wins his heart. Wednesday is “Fatal Witness,” a melodrama in which a wealthy old woman is murdered and the logi cal suspect is her nephew and heir. He, however, offers an ap parently water-tight alibi, declar ing that he spent the night on which the crime was committed in jail. A police inspector who doubts the young man’s story plays upon his superstitious nature and even Thursday and Friday is “Bells of Rosarita” with Roy Rogers and Dale Evans in the main roles. Roy Rogers’ newest Western, “Bells of Rosarita,” will prove a winner for Republic. All of Rog ers’ customary exploits are in evi dence, and a novel story and strong supporting cast help make the film on of his best. Rogers portrays himself, busy finishing a film, when two girls, Dale Evans and Adele Mara, ap pear, in need of some of the fic tionized aid he always has been able to perform in his pictures. A villain is about to make away with the ranch of one of the girls, be cause she is unable to produce a receipt of payment signed by her deceased father. Rogers jumps in to the breach, phones the Repub lic studio, enlisting the aid of every Western star on the lot for a mammoth circus-rodeo which provides enough money to save the ranch. In between the phone call and the show, there is sufficient riding, shooting and punching of villains. Nine songs aaa much to the pro ceedings, with two, “Bells of Rosa rita” and “I’m Gonna Build a Fence Around Texas,” being out standing. Bob Nolan and The Sons of Pioneers provide their custo mary excellent support as does the perennial George “Gabby” Hayes. Dale Evans and Adele Mara are fine as the hopeless, helpless girls, and Trigger, in a new act, per forms a jig. Grant Withers’ chin still can take Rogers’ punches, and Wild Bill Elliott, Allan Lane, Don ald Barry, Robert Livingston and Sunset Carson all are excellent as guest star cowboys. The Robert Mitchell Boy choir adds immeasur ably to the proceedings. Frank Mc Donald has performed a good directorial job from a fine screen play by Jack Townley. Eddy White is the associate producer, and ex cellent camara, work was provided by Ernest Miller. Saturday will be Charles Star rett in “Rustlers of the Bad Lands’’. The Durango Kid rides again. Charles Starrett, as the mysterious Durango Kid, and Tex Harding, his partner, are dis patched by the U. S. Army to in vestigate cattle-ru~tling which is holding up shipments of beef to outlying Army posts. Dub (Can nonball) Taylor is the third of the three musqueteers, and is charged with the task of providing comic relief. The three friends are accused of murder, and narrowly escape be ing lynched. However, skillful pis tol-play and some splendid riding bring the villains to their knees at last, and the cowboys ride off into the West, while A1 Trace and his Silly Symphonists celebrate their triumph in song .
