JUDY GARLAND WILL STAR IN "THE HARVEY GIRLS" HERE A swell rousing romantic mu- - sical that will provide excellent j entertainment will be “The Harvey j j^rirls”, a production all dressed . up in technicolor and star-studded , with Judy Garland in the lead . and John Hodiak as her leading ] man. , This gusty musical one that ' goes in heavily for action, is a sa- ' iute to the waitresses who helped ] to push the Harvey chain west- ' ward with the expansion of the ‘ nation and its railroad empire. -Judy Garland, Ohio gal stranded TO a New Mexico town when a letter-pursued romance with Chill Wills turns out to be a gag, be comes one of their number with the establishment of a new res taurant in an atmosphere of fire and brimstone common to the west of the 1890’s. She gets her self embroiled in the battle that ensues between the Harvey gen tlewomen and the saloon dames Jn a joint operated by John Ho ' Tliak, faced for the first time in his life with real competition. The floosies and their boss are defeat ed in their efforts to dislodge the Harvey crowd but not before a hell-roaring time has been had by all. Consider it no surprise that our Ohio baby and the danrehall hardrock fall in love. I -PROGRAM FOR NEXT WEEK AT THE IMPERIAL Edward G. Robinson and Mar garet O’Brien will play Sunday at the Imperial in a return pic ture, “Our Vines Have Tender ^Grapes.” Monday and Tuesday the Im perial offers an entertaining movie “Meet Me on Broadway” with Marjorie Reynolds and Fred Brady in the leading roles. The story Concerns a tempermenta! produc er in love with a night-club sing er. He is fired from the show he is producing, and takes on the i .^management of a country club, planning to put on a show there, using amateur talent. He quarrels with the night club singer, who ==z==—— has met a society playboy. To heal his pride, the producer is attentive to a society girl and plans to star her In the amateur 3how. After a particularly vio lent quarrel with the singer, how ever, he walks out on the show, and the singer tries to put it on alone. At the last moment the producer comes back. He and the singer are reconciled the show gdes on, and is a great success. Wednesday: “Idea Girl” is a light hearted, song and comedy offering that gives free rein to gags. Jess Barker, Julia Bishop and Alan Mowbray manage the prin cipal acting assignments pleas antly, while Charles Barnett and his orchestra are on hand to serve the swing set with some catchy numbers, the best of which is “I Can’t Get You Out of My Mind,” Mowbray, wolfish song-publish ing partner of serious - mined Barker, can’t resist employing at tractive Miss Bishop as a “song plugger.” Her particular method of getting songs publicized, however, involves the sacrifice of company stock owned by the partners, and each time this happens Barker goes into an epiletic rage only to calm down temporarily upon find ing that Miss Bishop’s publicity actually pays off. One of her ideas is a song contest, but when the winner cannot be found it looks like jail for Barker and Mow bray. All ends well, however, with a nick of time finding of the lucky one and the discovery by Miss Bishop and Barker that they are in love—past differences not withstanding.
