Yearly — In Advance ROANOKE RAPIDS, NORTH CAROLINA CARROLL WILSON, Owner and Editor Entered as Second Class matter April 3rd, 1914, at the poet office at Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, under Act of March 3rd, 1879 PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY AFTERNOON ENGLISH WAR BRIDE Two English war brides landed in this coun try this week to make their homes in North Caro lina. One of them comes to Roanoke Rapids. Much water has passed under the bridge in the swiftly moving centuries since our forefathers and hers landed in this new country to face the dangers of the wilderness and here founded a new nation. She, likewise, faces dangers in leaving her home and loved ones and entering a new life on this continent. It is up to us to see that life here is as pleasant as possible. We owe it to ourselves in the interest of hospitality, fair-play and decency for which our country is noted. We owe it to this former young citizen of our great English-speak ing ally for the future hope of the world depends to a great degree on the continued friendship and co-operation of America and England. Never was understanding, tolerance and unselfishness more necessary between two great peoples. HUHHH OK EEEEEE The greatest statesman who ever lived had no name. His wife (or rather, his woman, for they were not married) probably called him either Huhhh or Eeeeee, depending on whether she was a grunter or a squealer. It will never be known how or when he got the Great Idea, the most revolutionary political conception ever to enter the mind of a man. Of course he couldn’t talk, since he had no words to talk with. If he had been able to express it verbal ly, it would have gone something like this: “Now that my son is big and strong, the time h^s come for us to fight each other, and for one of us either to kill the other or drive him out of this cave and keep him out. It has always been that way. But that guy in the cave on the other side of the mountain is bigger and stronger than either of us, and sooner or later he will get the one that stays here. But what if Junior and I don’t fight? What if we both stay here and stick to gether? Then we’re safe, from that guy or any other guy. This is a good idea. I’m going to do my best to explain it to Junior.” That fantastic idea, born in the brain ot tne greatest statesman that ever lived, known as Huhhh or Eeeee, has gone far in the centuries that have passed. It now dominates, for instance the political structure under which 140 millioi Americans go about the business of living. I seems destined inevitably to continue its progress to the logical conclusion of a world government with world law to preserve the peace. For the statesmen got the idea not only as a means of protection from the guy on the other side of the mountain, but also as a means of protecting him self from Junior. How about a statue to Huhhh or Eeeee? li—.. ' .- . .r; ----- The other conference at London netd not have failed. We could have made it a great success, too,, by giving the Russians what they demanded. i I Fresh Drugs Fair Prices ACCURATE COMPOUNDING wl Our story is told in the “’'4 headlines.
