YELLOW JACKETS WIN THREE GAMES BY WIDE MARGINS WYLIE WARREN Coach “Rock" Venters’ steadily improving array of Yellow Jacket cagers, bombarding the nets with regularity in the first half, reg istered an easy 30-14 victory over the Elizabeth City Yellow Jack ets in a conference tilt there last Friday. The local quint rolled up a 18-8 lead in the initial half that never was headed in matching their seventh win of the season. The Roanoke Rapids five jump ed into an early lead when Smith made good on a free throw and Stacia and Wrenn dropped in field goals. Coach Blakeley’s coastal Jackets never had much of a chance to score, as the local quint either made their shots or controlled the rebounds under both backboards. The Venters’ quint used a zone de fense because the tidewater team’s court was so narrow. The defense paid off well as the Jax held the losers to only five goals from action. . Wylie Warren with eleven and 1 ’ Charles Smith with nine, led the local five in the scoring column. Crowe topped the losers with six markers. Roanoke Rapids plays at Kins ton tonight in a conference game Taking advantage of the Ser pent’s vulnerable defense, coach Rock Venters Yellow Jacket Cag ers ran roughshod over Tarboro High School, 34-11 in a confer ence game played here Tuesday. This was the Jackets fourth con secutive win and their eighth vic tory compared with three set backs. Coach Venters’ quint bounced in to an early lead on a pair of hook shots by Warren. Wrenn and Smith each dropped in a field goal to run the count to 8-0 before the visitors could tally a point. The Yelllow Jackets rolled up a halftime margin of 15-3. The local qu'.nt returned in the final half and racked up nineteen markers. Charlie Smith was the big gun in this last half spree with ten of the Jax nineteen points. Coach Venters* used fifteen players in the contest, including five from the Junior varsity team. Charles Smith, knocking them in from all angles and Wylie War ren, Jax center led the Jax scor ing parade with fourteen and twelve points respectively. Buddy Wrenn and Sam Wood turning in a good floor game for the Venters quint. Roanoke Raoids’ fast stepping array of cagers posted their sixth victory of the current basketball season here Thursday night by knocking off the Aurelian Springs SO-16, in a non-comference af fair. The Jackets had things pretty much their own way with the ex ception of the first six minutes ol the battle when the visitors kept up with the locals, making basket for basket. After that, the Jax pulled away and never were in serious trouble. The Jax held a halftime margin of 16-10. The Aurelian Springs quint was missing set shots all evening. They took plenty of shots at the basket but just couldn’t seem to connect. Coach Venters used his substi tutes freely during the game. He used seventeen. Wylie Warren topped the wim ners with sixteen points. Buddy Wrenn and Charles Smith turned in good floor performances. Hux, a guard, garnered eleven mark ers to pace the losers. Gore - Brown Mr. and Mrs. Willie Brown of Roanoke Rapids announce the marriage of their daughter, Eliz abeth Lee, to Chief Boatswan Mate, Henry Rufus Gore on Oct ober 14, 1945 at the home of Mrs. Laura Barnhill at Boca Grande, Florida with Dr. Stew art Long, pastor of First Baptist Church officiating. Mr. Gore is the son of the 'ate Mr. and Mrs. George Gore of Wilmington, N. C. Since getting discharged from the U. S. Merchant Marines he has accepted a position with his broth ers at Southport, N. C., where they are now residing. Hobbs - James Mr. and Mrs. G. T. Sullivan an nounce the marriage of their daughter, Louise, to William S. Hobbs of Raleigh, son of Mrs. M. S. Hobbs of Southern Pines, on January 5, at Richmond, Vir ginia. Raimo - Edmondson Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Edmondson of this city announce the marriage ot their daughter, Ruth to John R^imo, son of Mr. and Mrs. Al bert Raimo of Mt. Ephraime, N. J. on December 29 in Philadelphia, Pa. Mrs. Carmen Piselli, aunt of the bridegroom, was the bride’s only attendant. Mr. and Mrs. Raimo will make their home in Philadelphia. Ofcharik - Woodruff Miss Virginia Woodruff of Ral eigh, daughter of Mrs. J. W. Wood ruff of Norfolk and Roanoke Rapids, became the bride of Ru dolph G. Ofcharik of Mononga liela, Pa., on Saturday afternoon, January 19, at 4:00 o’clock in the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Ral eigh. The simple but impressive double ring ceremony was per formed by the Rev. Charles J O’Connor. A program of wedding music was rendered by Mrs. Cle ments, organist. The bride was becomingly at tired in a three-piece suit of powder blue and brown with mat ching accessories and wore a cor sage of white orchids. Her only attendant was Mrs. Lola Mitchell, matron-of-honor. Mrs. Mitchell wore a black dressmaker suit and a corsage of pink rose buds. James M. Potter of Raleigh, was best man. The bride, formerly of Roanoke Rapids has resided in Raleigh for the past five years and is employ ed in the Purchasing Department of the State Highway and Public Works Commission. Mr. Ofcharik is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Ofcharik of Monongahela, Pa. He has recently been discharged from the Army after serving twenty-two month3 in the European and Asiatic-Pa cific Theatres of war with the Corps of Engineers. Mr. and Mrs. Ofeharik will make their home in Raleigh. S. Mi Thompson is a patient at the Roanoke Rapids Hospital.
