LOOKING OVER OUR DISTRICT'S HEALTH By ROBERT F. YOUNG, M. D., District Health Officer RABIES . The Halifax County Health De ▼ partment has been advised that an epizootic of rabies among dogs is in progress in Edgecombe, Nash and Wilson counties. This information is being made avail able. to the public, not to frighten, but to inform the citizens of this county. Attention was called to the fact in a recent article that the season of the year for rabies is at hand and that precautions should be taken to guard against a rabies f epidemic in Halifax County. It i* urged that everyone, par ticularly children, avoid all strange dogs and that all citizens who own dogs have them immu nized against rabies as soon as 1 possible. Anyone owning a dog or observ ing a dog that behaves strangely should see that the animal is con x:_3 _4.S1 14. dnfnMVMlxnd whether or not the condition is t rabies. There are all stages and types of rabies, and a dog does not have to be “foaming at the mouth” to have this disease. Many times the dog has a paralysis and staggers when it walks; its eyes may be glassy; or it may snap at any and all objects it passes. Occasionally a friendly animal will change its behavior and avoid its master or even leave its home during the early stages of the i disease—and later develop the ra bid stage. If, after an animal is confined, it developes signs and symp toms that resemble rabies, a veti erinarian should be called to con firm the diagnosis. If there be any doubt about the diagnosis, it is recommended that the animal's head be sent to the State Labora tory of Hygiene, properly packed in ice. The Health Deaprtment will furnish information when re quested regarding the packing of these heads.
