Tobacco Gels
More Acres
Tobacco farmers of North Caro
lina are expected to devote ap
proximately 816,000 acres this year
to the production of flue-cured an
burley leaf, says the Federal-State
Crop Reporting Service in the N.
C. Agriculture Department.
If intentions are followed, the
acreage this season will be nine
per cent larger than in 1945 in
the flue-cured belts and 10 per
cent smaller in the burley tobacco
regions.
In releasing the estimate, Rus
sell Handy, crop statistician, ex
plained that the information was
based on a careful survey made in
all tobacco producing areas of the
State. He said that all indica
tions point to flue-cured tobacco
farmers* attempting to take full
advantage o fthe increased quota
r'- - .
“No doubt some farmers will
crverplant their • allotments, but
others will not plant their fu 1
quotas,” said Handy.
In the Old and Middle belts,
farmers report that they Plan
-increase their crop by the fud
10 per cent .which would raise
the acreage to 315,000 from the
286,000 acres planted in tobacco
last season.
In Eastern North Carolina grow
ers say they plan to increase their
acreage by nine per cent, plant
ine 385 000 acres in flue-cured to
fcacco as compared with 353,000 in
19S>wn in the Border Belt, the
acreage is expected to go to 92,
«X> acres, or eight per cent more
*han last season.
Handy Said that the relatively
poor prices received by most bur
ley producers during the season
just closed and the reduction by
10 per cent in the national allot
ment for this type of tobacco have
caused hurley producers to reduce
their acreage.
