The Jaycees Went Peach Picking The Roanoke Rapids Junior Chamber of Commerce already has established a reputation for being fast workers — but it appears that the boys didn’t know their own speed. Having been in operation for only three weeks — and yet to receive an official charter — the Jaycees were called upon to fur nish a ‘Miss Roanoke Rapids” for entry in the North Carolina beauty contest at Wilson on August 3. So the Jaycees took a hasty look around town, and came up with a prize catch. Her name is Miss Miriam Mountford. She’s pictured on the left. Miss Mountford, thus, will rep resent Roanoke Rapids in the con test, which, of course, will decide North Carolina’s representative to the rational Miss America contest later in August. Miss Mountford is an employee of the Virginia Electric and Pow er Company, is 18 years of age. She’s five feet, six and one-half inches tall, and weighs 120 pounds. And she has no teephone number. Jack Vincent, president of the local Jaycees, said today that ordi narily a beauty contest would have been conducted here, but that the pressing deadline forced the club to dispense with that formal ity. However, he said that next year, the club will sponsor such a contest. Miss Mountford will receive a week’s vacation at Carolina Beach before going to Wilson for the beauty contest. All her expenses will be paid by the Carolina Beach Jaycees, and she and the other contestants will be entertained nightly with dances and parties. Miss Mountford, a little reluctant to accept the Jaycees proposal, finally agreed to enter the contest on behalf of the local Jaycees. It will be the first time that a Roa noke Rapids girl ever has been entered in the contest. She is a graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School, class of 1945. She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. T. Mountford of Roanoke Rap ids. Jaycees Elect Four Directors Four directors were elected this week by the Roanoke Rapid3 Junior Chamber of Commerce. They are M. C. Newsome, Jr., and Robert Josey, who will serve for two years; and Lunsford Crew and Jesse Helms, who will serve for one year. The directors will serve in an executive capacity in formulating pol:cies and procedures for opera tion of the club’s business, along with the usual officers. Jack Vincent is president of the club. Arnold Hughes is vice presi dent; Carlton Cannon, secretary; and Frank Neal, secretary. I Registration Is Scheduled Veterans and Non-Veterans In order to determine the de mand and the location of propos ed college centers, the steering committee of the Governor’s com mittee on veterans’ education is planning to conduct a preliminary registration of veterans and non veterans next Monday and Tues day. The registration will be held [in the offices of the county and [ (Continued on page 5—Beet. A) Missionaries Make Good On Invitation To Visit Here Through an invitation issued by Capt. J. Winfield Crew, Jr, while he was serving in the armed forces in the Chinar Burma area during World War H. Miss Frances Flannigan of Ireland and Miss Winifred Embery of Austra lia, two missionaries, are in Roa noke Rapids this week for a brief visit. It. is the first time either of the young women have been to the United States and when ask ed if they were disappointed in the country and the American people, their faces lighted up and with beaming smiles they both agreed that "it is a country of beauty and plenty, and oh, the people! They are so friendly and hospitable.” Their first stop in this coun try. of course, was in New Tack, where they landed bn June 3. From there they went to Copper hill, Tenn, to visit Capt. and Mrs. Edward Middleton; thence to this city where they are guests of Capt. and Mrs. Crew. Leaving here they will go to Huntington, W. Va, for a short visit and then to Iowa They plan to leave iu September for their homes—Miss Flannigan to Ire land and Miss Embery to Mel bourne, Australia Telling of a few of their ex periences during the battle tar Burma and the Burma road the two young ladies gave interest ing detailed accounts of some of the hardships suffered by them and the people in China "The Japs were experts at dis guising themselves.
