Marine Recruiter
Here on Tuesday
The District of Raleigh Marine
Recruiting office has just an
nounced that there will be a Ma
rine Recruiting Sergeant in the
Post Office Building in Roanoke
iPP[npid'= on Tuesday of each week
during the month of August. The
Seigeant will be here to inter
view men between the ages of 17
and 30 who are interested in en
listing in the U. S. Marine Corps
or the Air Corps units.
Enlistment periods are for two,
three, or four years for general
duty and for three or four years
for duty with the Air Corps units.
Men who enlist prior ta October
fOfh will be eligible for all the ben- I
efits of the G. I. Bill of Rights the
office stated.
Men who enlist, after about eight
weeks of recruit training, are gua
ranteed a 10 day furlough before
going assigned to a regular duty
station, aboard a ship of the U.
S. Fleet, or at any of the many
interesting foreign stations where
Mar.ues serve.

ing in the Corps.
The Sergeant will be in the Post
Office from 8:00 a. m., until 4:30
p. m., each Tuesday during the
month of August.
All men, who are interested in
the Marine Corps, are invited to
yisit the office for any informa
tion ihey might desire.

Holds Meeting
Mrs. Arthur Harper and Mrs.
Lou Faison were hostesses to the
Star-lite Club Monday night at
the home of Mrs. Faison in Gas
ton.
Contests were held with Mrs.
Vernon Rogers, winning all the
prizes. The jack-pot was won by
Mrs. Frank Vaughan. jj

in' green beans, mashed potatoes,
lettuce, tomatoes, hot rolls, soft
drinks and cakes were served to
the following members: Mesdames
Reuben Epps, Abner Braswell,
Sydney Sadler, Paul Bailey, Vern
on Rogers, Frank Vaughan, Grady
Hawains, Reuben Daniel, Lou Fai
son and Arthur Harper.
Deaths
JOHN E. STARKE
John E. Starke, 85, died in Roa
noke Rapids Hospital Sunday. Fu
neral services were held Tuesday
afternoon at 3 o’clock from Olive
Branch Church near Gasburg, Va.
and interment was in the church
cemetery. Surviving are three
daughters, Mrs. P. B. Baird and
Mr.;. Plummie Williams of Gas
burg, Va., Mrs. Morris Wright of
F^pona, Va., three sons, Kimmie
& Starke and Luther E. Starke
of Roanoke Ra.pids, John W.
Starke of La Grange, Ga., and
19 grandchildren and six great
grandchildren.
