Mary's Feast At Catholic Church The Assumption of our Blessed Lady into Heaven, the greatest of Alary’s feasts, will be solemn ly observed at St .Johns Catho lic Church by the celebration of Holy Mass at seven o'clock on Thursday morning, August 15. Aft er Mass the traditional Litany of Loreto will be recited for the gen eral welfare of our beloved coun try Confessions will be heard be fore Mass, beginning at six thirty. As the fifteenth of August is a holyday of obligation, Catholics are obliged to hear Holy Mass oil that day and to refrain from all unnecessary service work. On Sundays, Holy Mass is offer ed at seven and at nine o’clock in the morning with confessions being heard on Saturday evening, beginning at seven o’clock. The sermon topic for August 11 will be "Alary Assumed into Heaven.' The North Carolina Catholic, a weekly newspaper, with head quarters at Naxareth, North Caro lina, will appear for the first time on September 1. Miss Ann Georgia Williams, of Roanoke Rap ids. will be the correspondent for this section of the state. Fether Peter M. Denges, pastor of the local Catholic Church, ex tends a hearty welcome to the public to attend all Cat-hoKc serv ices at any time. Gurley - Wilder Miss Mary Elizabeth Wilder, daughter of Mrs. William Gordon Wilder and the late Mr. Wilder of near Franklinton and Joseph Byron Gurley, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Monroe Gurley of Roanoke Rapids, were married on July 27 in Perry’s Chapel near Franklinton. The Rev. Robert Ran dolph of Lynchburg, Va., perform ed the ceremony. The wedding music was rendered by Miss Louise Godbey of Winston-Salem, pianist and Mrs. Charles Miller of Roa noke Rapids, soloist. The bride, given in marriage by her uncle, M. D. Wildee wore a wedding gown of white faille. Her fingertip veil of illusion fell from a coronet of shirred net trimmed with pearls. She carried a white Bible centered with a white orch id with purple throat and showered with stephanotis. Mrs. Charles McNatt of Winston Salem was matron of honor. She wore a gown of white taffeta. She carried a bouquet of deep pink gladioli and light pink ast The bridegroom’s brother, Clay ton M. Gurley, of Roanoke Rapids, was best man. The ushers were William Avery, John Lee Wilder George Gurley and Edward Shaw. The mother of the bride wore a beige dress with black accessories and a corsage of red roses. The bridegroom's mother wore a black dress with black and white ac cessories and a corsage of white roses. FVlowing the ceremony, a re caption was given at the home of the bride’s mother. After the reception Mr. and Mrs. Gurley left for a wedding trio. For traveling Mrs. Gurley wore a two-piece suit of raw silk of a deep fuchsia color with black accessories and an orchid cor sage. Mrs. Gurley is a graduate of FOTC and has done graduate work in Journalism at Columbia University and the University of North Carolina. For the past sev eral years she has taught in the High School of Roanoke Rapids. Mr. Gurley is a graduate of N. C. State College. He served in the armed forces 51 months, attaining the rank of Major. He is at pres ent connected with the Engineer ing Department of the Rosemary Mills in Roanoke Ra.pids. On Friday night following the wedding rehearsal, Matthew D. Woman's Society Hoirs Meeting The circles of the Woman’s So ciety of Christian Service held its regular meeting at the Rosemary Methodist Church Monday even ing at 7:30 o’clock. Mrs. Jimmie Tucker, presided. Miss Corrinnie Satterthwaite gave a number of selections on the piano. Mrs. H. F Csmeron gave the devotional. R?v. W. R. Stevens gave an in spiring message on missions. Thir ty answered roll call after which a short business session was held and refreshments served. Mrs. N. D. Cox and Mrs. C. L. Bristow were hostesses. Town Talk Mrs. Emily Irvin spent last week in A’exandria, Va., and Richmond with Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Irvin and Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Jones. Mrs. Wade Marks spent the week end in Durham, N. C. with re’atives. Mrs. W. H. Babcock, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Vincent and daughter Beverly, spent last week at Vir ginia Beach, Va. Mrs. Xcll R. Bee of Washing ton, D. C., and Mrs. T. B. Attmore of Washington, N. C., spent the week end here with their sister Mrs. W. H. Babcock.' F. W. J. Karsh is spending some time here with his daughter, Mrs. George Hayes, Jr. C. A. Wyche, D. C. Clark and Swain Boy left Sunday morning for Montreat, X. C., where they will spend a week. Miss Addie Cowherd of Gordans vi'le, Va., who has been spending sometime heFe as the guest of Miss Susan Holladay, returned to her heme Monday. Mrs. C. A. Wyche has returned frem Montreat.
