RODNEY FREEMAN BECOMES
NEXT STUDENT PRESIDENT
Rodney Freeman, Heath
Graves, and Hyon Paek
captured respectively the
offices of president,
vice-president/secretary,
and tresurer of the
1986-87 NCSSM Student
Council in the April 28
elections. The six senior
representatives were
selected May 12.
Elected as next

Bhattacharyya, Richard
Davis, Bethany Deputch,
Tony Flowers, Ray Kennedy,
and Lawrence Lee.
The objective of the
student council is to
promote the well-beiri9 ^fid

throushout the school.

Under the supervision
of faculty sponsors
Virginia Wilson and James
Litle, Kathleen Stewart,
chairperson of the
elections committee,
organised the elections.
Kathleen announced the
candidates, and Anthony
Jones, current student
council treasurer, timed
the speeches. Student
council president Andy
Ward opened the elections.
The entire junior
class assembled in the
multipurpose bulding on
both election nights to
hear the candidates give
three-minute speeches.
Students made their
choices by secret ballots.
Prior to campaigning,
all candidates had ten
percent of the student
body sign a petition
qualifying him/her to run
for a position on the
student council.
Candidates were allowed to
campaign for one week
before elections were
held.

Thirty teams competed
in the morning event of
answering science
questions. The questions
varied in style and

tested an individual's

Some other events of
the afternoon included

orienteering, and the

plenty of events to appeal
to everyone's talent and
interest,’ said Julie
Woosley, a member of the
winning team.
Laura Carter, another
team 11 member, said,
‘Winning was great this
year and I'm looking
forward to it again next
year.’

The Roommate Game is
based on the Newlywed Game
and was created by the
1983-84 Dorm Council. The
game was revived by Keith
Privett and SAB for this
year. According to
Privett, ‘It's just for

Twenty-four NCSSM
students participated in
the State Math Contest at
C. State May 1.
Keith Privett placed 4th;
Linda Green, 5th; Philip
Mauskopf, 8th; Mark
Snesrud, 11th; Mike Grant,
12th; Stephen Craig, 13th;
Mitch Sanders, 20th; Bert
Hackney, 22nd; Geoff
Burgess, 27th; Floyd
Bullard, 28th; Bina
Bhattacharyya, 29th; and
Jim Sands, 30th.
The contest, a
culmination of various
regional qualifying levels
around the state, is
sponsored by the State
Department of Public
Instruction and covers
skills of precalculus,
probability^ and geometry.
A total of 110
students from around the
state participated. NCSSM
students qualified at the
Math Symposium. Floyd
Bullard said, ‘It's
wonderful that students
have an opportunity to
compete with people all
over the state."
NCSSM students had
varied opinions about the
day's events. ‘It wasn't
too bad,' Mark Snesrud
said, "When they first
called my name, I couldn't
believe it!" exclaimed
Philip Mauskopf.
On top of everything,
all the work did not
dampen the spirits of Bina
Bhattacharyya who said, * I
knew I had gotten
something when the
announcer couldn't
pronounce the next name.'
The top 20 receive
full tuition scholarships
to any of 26 North
Carolina colleges. In
addition, the top seven
and Mitch Sanders will go
to the American Legion's
Math League at
Pennsylvania State May
30-31.
Coach Kevin
Bartkovich summed up
sentiments on the day by
saying, ‘We're proud of
all the students. We're
glad that they could get
this recognition.*
•We are surprised
that we won, but are
ecstatic nevertheless,*
said Mandy Slater, a
member of one of four,
winning teams at the
Olympics of the Mind State
Competition, held April
25.
NCSSM sent three
teams to Queen's College
in Charlotte for the
competition and brought
back a first place trophy
in the Great Art Lives
category. The members of
the winning team include:
Caroline Choi, Tom Cole,
John Grimes, Patti Huang,
Tammy Lane, Rebecca Owens,
and Mandy Slater. The
other two teams went in
the categories of Bridging
the Gap
Hunter.

all,' said Laura Gerald.

IN THE AIR TONIGHT. NCSSM's prom. In
The Air Tonight, was held Saturday, May
24 at the Sheraton University Center.
Lynne Donges said, ‘ Over 400 people
attended the prom.* Champagne glasses
with the theme printed on them were
given as souvenirs. 'The prom committee
did an excellent job of decorating,"
according to Jeanine Kelly. The center
of attraction was a huge ice sculpture
of a unicorn head which adorned the food
tables.
