WELCOME ISSUE Durham: \ew nomeiown To Reservoir and Hillandale Rd| I* • I '\ Getting Around CARRIE HAMBY Weekdays? Weekends? I know you’ve only been here for five minutes, but it’s true. Durham is your new residence. Sci ence and Math your new neighbor hood. This, of course, means differ ent things for different people, de pending upon whether you came from Lizard Lick, NC or from the bustling Queen City or from your house on Hillandale Rd. ten min utes away. But whatever your situation, it is true that Durham is a great place for a student to spend a couple of years. The resourceful and cautious student will never run out of places to go in all of that free time you have heard so much about. I know what you are doing now. You are wishing you could find me, shake me senseless and scream into my left ear “But I don’t have a CAR!!! How in the name of Pete am I going to get any farther than the end of the parking lot?’’. Well, chum, welcome to the wonderful world of public transit. The closest hangout for NCSSM students is 9th Street. A few steps out of Bryan circle and up 9th a couple of blocks are all of the eating places you see to your right and many others, gift and clothing shops, Durham mainstays The Regulator Bookstore and Poindexter Records, a Kerr Drug and other businesses. A short walk on Main St. or Hillsborough Rd. in Erwin Square Plaza is Mad Hatter’s Coffee Shop, where Science and Mathers like to So, how much is it? go for their caffeine breaks. The Duke campus is a great re source for NCSSM students. Many kids like to run around Duke Wall, a good 1.7 mile route. A left off of Broad St. onto the bike path will take you to the main buildings of Duke l^t Campus (in cluding Libby Library, the smaller one—good for quick reference) and to the bus stop where the free Duke shuttle runs from East Campus to West Campus when Duke is in ses sion. On West Campus you will find Perkins Library, a great place to do research, and beautiful Duke Chapel. Also within walking distance in the other direction down Broad St. and Guess Rd. are Northgate Mall and Harris Teeter. Sure you can walk to 9th St and to Northgate, and van loops run during the week, but if you are not familiar with bus riding you’ll get that way. The Durham Area Transit Au thority (DATA) bus line will be the main mode of transportation for NCSSM students this year. Stu dents can get to malls, restaurants and theater^ on the weekends and can ride to and form Northgate dur ing the week (seearticle below.) Well-planned trips are the best kind. Always travel in pairs and, better yet, in groups. It’s much more fun that way and downright unsafe to go alone. Make sure you’ve left enough lime to get back, and take the school’s phone num ber and the phone numbers of any people you know in the area, just in case the unexpected does occur. Any other advice?
