NFL Early Season Glance
John Zhang
T he pro football season
is off to a crazy start,
filled with numerous
surprises, disappointments,
and controversies, .JPre-sea-
son predictions and expecta
tions are out the window, as
losing teams from last year
are becoming winners, and
winning teams are going
downhill. Here is a look at
some early season stories.
Team News
NFC South
Thought to be the worst
division in the league before
the season. New Orleans and
Tampa are 5-1, Carolina is
overachieving, and Atlanta
with Michael Vick are excit
ing and improving.
St. Louis Rams
What happened to this
team? Limping badly, the
Rams could be in for a long
season. Crucial star players
Kurt Warner and Orlando
Pace are out with injuries. A
1-5 start just about killed
hopes for playoffs.
Carolina Panthers
The Panthers lost 15
straight games before win
ning in the season opener this
year. This was followed by a
three game winning streak,
though they soon lost some
heartbreakers. Coach John
Fox is doing great with a
team that is playing well
despite a lack of talent and
depth.
San Diego Chargers
The Chargers, pereimial
losers, are finally winning.
They have gone six straight
years without a winning
record. The Chargers are
beating up on everyone,
including the defending
Super Bowl champions.
Rising star LaDainian
Tomlinson is one of the best
running backs in the league.
They stand atop the standings

N athan Marsh Meier
was bom on
December 12, 1985.
An excellent, all-around ath
lete, he competes in cross
country in the fall, swimming
in the winter, and track in the
spring. Nate’s favorite of the
three is track.
He runs the mile, two
mile, and 400 in track. His
fastest times are 4:40 in the
mile, 10:08 in two miles, and
also 57 seconds in the 400 .
Meier led our Cross Country
team this year coming in at
least 1st or 2nd for the
Unicorns in every race. He
was also named one of the tw'o
all-invitational runners fium
NCSSM.
A junior, Nate says that
"there isn't that much free
time, but the work is do-able".
In his free time he likes to ski,
fish, and sleep. He is consid
ering Georgia Tech, NC State, J

Player News
Steve Spurrier
The "offensive master
mind" and new coach of the
Redskins is looking dumb.
The Fun 'n Gun offense
should be renamed Sad 'n
Bad. They are ranked 27th
out of 32 teams in total
offense.
Roosevelt Colvin
Who the heck is this
guy? Chicago Bears
Linebacker leads the league
with 7 sacks.
Randy Moss
One of the most physi
cally gifted players is under
achieving big-time. Moss is
struggling and dropping
balls. The Vikings should be
worried with Moss as his
numerous off-the field inci
dents create distractions and
raise questions about his
character.

USA basketball team
finishes sixth in world
John Zhang
"any of us are accus
tomed to seeing our
-dominant "Dream
Team" sweep through the bas
ketball World Championships,
winning first place. This year
though, the U.S. team finished
in a dismal sixth place with an
overall record of 6-3, losing to
Yugoslavia, Spain and
Argentina.
Yugoslavia, known as a
strong international team with
NBA players Predrag
Stojakovic and Vlade Divac,
was expected to give the U.S.
a fight. However, nobody
expected the U.S. to fall to the
likes of Spain and Argentina.
In fact, before this summer,
the U.S. was a dominating 58-
0 when playing with profes
sional players. The prestige
and the dominating presence
of the U.S team have faded
quickly.
The decreasing quality of
players who are chosen for the
team, the individual oriented
style of play that is pow the
norm in the NBA, and the lack
of interest in participating in
this international event have
contributed to the decline of
U.S basketball. The team's
offense focused on isolating
the players for one-on-one
play, rather than a team-ori
ented setup. Also, not long
ago, the finest players of the
NBA were honored to repre
sent their country in this inter
national competition. Lately,
though, players have turned
down the chance to partici
pate, believing the U.S. would
win no matter who plays.
The recent shock of the
losses at the World
Championships should influ
ence the top players in the
NBA to consider playing and
bring the gold back to the
U.S.
