Record number of
students attend
Queer Prom

The Triangle GS A network
iNSIDEoUT hosted its annual
LGBT-friendly dance, called
Queer Prom, on May 11,
and attracted a large crowd
of NCSSM students. Many
attendees dressed in ragged
clothes and zombie make-up to
fit this year’s theme—“Queer
Prompocalypse”.
“I’d guess we had
something like 40 to 60 people
last year, whereas this year we
had nearly 300, approximately
45 of which were Science and
Math students,’’ said Spectrum
leader Tyler Kissinger.
The event included
a dance-off, and also had a
photographer like a normal
prom. INSIDEoUT also
asked for optional five-dollar
donations at the door to help
run the entirely donation-based
organization.
“Even though we have a
great queer community here
[at school]...it’s definitely
useful to create these sorts of
inter-school, inter-faith, and
inter-generational relationships
with members of the queer
community in the Triangle,”
said Kissinger.
Members of Spectrum,
NCSSM’s gay-straight alliance,
usually have a large turn out at
Queer Prom, but many students
not closely affiliated with the
group went to dance and have
a good time.
“My roommate, Joy Hill,
was going, and a group of my
friends was going, and they
asked if I wanted to go with
them,” said Caroline Lamb.
“People were more open and
expressive [than at Science and
Math dances], because nobody
really cared what anyone else
was doing and people were
more accepting.”
Students differed on
whether Queer Prom increases
awareness of the queer and
allied community in the
Triangle.
“I didn’t really get an inside
look on what [iNSIDEoUT]
does, but they did talk some
about what they do and asked
for volunteers,” said Lamb.
“I talked to a lot of
people that didn’t necessarily
know much about the queer
community and they were
surprised to know that a lot
schools don’t let you take same-
sex dates [to proms],” said
Kissinger.
