FOOTBALL
The varsity football squad of L.H.S. really came to life In Its last season
and played In the finals of the South Piedmont Conference. The team was
only three times defeated during the season. The Yellow Jackets ended
up the ’47 season In third place with Albemarle and Asheboro taking first
and second. The year’s record for the Jackets Is six wins, two ties, and
three defeats.
The first game of the season, played at home with Salisbury, was prob
ably the toughest. Asheboro came next and had a strong team, but were
outscored by the Jackets 20-0 for the first conference game. Children's Home,
conference champions of last year, came to meet a strong Lexington team,
but neither team was able to score. Although Lexington came out on the
short end of the score, she matched the High Point Blsons’ play throughout
the game, as the Jackets tasted their first defeat of the season, 14-7. The
next two games for the Jackets were easy ones, the team defeating Barium
Springs 25-0 and Monroe 46-0. Reldsvllle proved to be a rugged team but
was ,trampled 19-0 by the locals. Thomasvllle and Concord followed, and
the Jackets defeated both teams by the same score, 12-7, which paved the
way for the finals with Albemarle. The Jackets held the Bulldogs for the
first half; but later In the game, the Bulldogs got a firm grip on the locals
to get the title 12-7. Henderson gained a 20-12 victory over Lexington in a
post season game to end the ’47 season.
The team played a fine defensive game all season with only 67 points
being scored on them. The offense was slow at times, but the team went
strong most of the time, with a total of 160 points scored against their
opponents.
Paul Williams, “Chub” Wilson, Jimmy Johnson, Hubert Olive, and Stuart
Brown are the only seniors on the squad, while the rest will return next
year. Those returning are Pete Clark, Bency Walser, Charles Price, Bill
Eanes, Bill Blalock, Johnny Newell and “Stinky” Gibson.
BASKETBALL
Even though the female Jackets lost more than one-third of their games
this year, the local boys were more fortunate and lost only three conference
games during the season.
In the non-conference games, the boys’ and girls’ teams defeated Coble’s
Dairy once; the boys took two wins over Ashemore and Junior Home; and the
girls split games with Ashemore and Junior Order Home.
The seniors on the team who will not return next year are: Hubert Olive,
Paul Williams, Bill Johmson, Jim.my Johnson, Stuart Brown, Bob Peeler,
“Grampie” McCrary, and “Chub” Wilson. Those returning are Harold Carter,
Pete Clark, Jack Burkhart, and Bensy Walser.
TENNIS
The tennis team has played but one match so far this season and lost
to a strong Hanes High team 5-4. Even though they were defeated the first
match, the prospects this season look good.
The team is as follows: 1. Paul Williams, 2. Bob Peeler, 3. Woody McKay,
4. Ralph Craver, 5. Jackie Lancaster, 6. Bill Blalock, 7. Jack Swaim. The
doubles are: 1. Williams and Craver, 2. McKay and Blalock, 3. Swaim and
Lancaster.
GOLF
The Golf, team consisting of R. H. Leonard, Hubert Olive, Pete Clark,
and Henry Wall, with Mr. Gilstrap as the coach, traveled to Greenville,
South Carolina, to the North and South Carolina High School Golf Tourna
ment. The boys did not win any honors except Henry Wall, who won
several golf balls for having high score in the tournament. The lowest score
was an 86 for the 18 holes by R. H. Leonard, number one man on the team.
