September 26, 1947 THE LEXHIPEP Page 7 —Dong' Craver Lexington High School has thirteen lettermen returning from its 1946 team that lost the South Piedmont Conference title when they bowed before an Albemarle Powerhouse 12-7. Around these returnees Coach Jimmy Maus is building his hopes for the ’47 grid season. With ten of these veterans as starters, the Yellow Jackets should go high if not to the top in the scramble for top conference honors. When asked what he thought Lexington’s chances were this year he replied, “We are weak in reserves, but I’m hoping for a good season.” Though the Jackets’ reserves are scrappy and are greatly determined, they lack the essential items of size and experience. Without a strong reserve strength his chances for a typical Lexington powerhouse such as those of the late ‘JO’S and early 40’s are very small. Tne Lexington men look well on defense with such men as Walser, Blalock, Price, Everhart and Clark coming in fast, but the ground attack against Salisbury didn’t look too well, lor the Jackets were unable to start a sustained drive all night, but though the Statesville game showed more offense of being a real passing threat. But it must be remembered that such a team as High Point, though having lost quite a few starters still packs plenty of power and are capable of stopping the Jackets. Also Albemarle, Children’s Home, and Concord are out for blood, and Thomasville is an even present threat. The curtain is up, the stage is set, only time can tell whether the team of ’47 will go down the cleat-marked path to glory or be sidetracked along the way.
