SERIOUS THOUGHTS
"It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord.''
—Psalms 92:1
Come, ye thonkful people, come
Raise the song of harvest home;
All is safely gathered in.
Ere the winter storms begin;
God, our Maker, doth provide
For our wants to be supplied
Come to God's own temple, come
Roise the song of harvest home.
—"Come Ye Thankful People'
Henry Alford, 1844
Hugh Hartshone, 1915
ARE WE THANKFUL?
—Joanne Koonts
“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise.”
—Psalm 100.
Because Thanksgiving is here people begin to think more than ever:
“Am I really thankful for everything I have?” This time of year is per
haps the only time people really consider this fact, although we are thankful
for all God has given us, even though sometimes we do not seem very grateful.
When we look back and think about how much more we have than our
forefathers had and how appreciative they were, we feel ashamed of our
selves for living in a world that is becoming more selhsh day by day. When
the Pilgrims landed after a long and exhausting trip to America on the
Mayflower, they gave thanks to God for being with them and taking care
of them. Up through the years Thanksgiving has been an annual observ
ance. This year perhaps more than ever before we should be thankful on
Thanksgiving. We should be glad that the long and dreadful war which
took so many loved ones from our homes is over. We are very lucky in
America that we are not starving from hunger and seeking places in which
to be allow to live, as the people of Europe are.
We can look around us and find so very many beautiful things which
we take for granted day in and day out. Human nature alone gives us the
things we are most thankful for. We should someetimes take time and
think seriously about all the things around us.
This year with all our relatives and friends together at home, let’s make
this a real Thanksgiving.
L. H. S. CELEBRATES BOOK WEEK
Schools all over the nation observed Book Week, November 16-22. The
library staff, under the direction of Miss Vernelle Gilliam, the librarian,
observed Book Week in many interesting and clever ways. During the week
many clever exhibits were on display in the library. Invitations were sent
to each home-room to visit the library. The invitations .which were in
book form, read:
“L. H. S. Library on Display—Lexington, N. C.
Dedicated to Students of L. H. S.
Book Week—November 16-22, 1947
Your Invitation:
Brave Men and Daughters of Democracy, you the Modern Great Americans

We hope Zacky’s chasing the turkey.
So we’ll go ahead and not fret.
Audrey Blackburn is the girl this month
And Zacky Taylor the boy.
Both are very cute and popular.
And neither is shy nor coy.
Audrey likes everybody, cheeseburgers, yellow.
Chocolate milk shakes, and jello;
Basketball, camp, Macbeth, a good time,
Ingrid Bergman, and corn (either kind?).
She dislikes raw eggs, candles, oysters,
Tri-Hi-Y initiations, and the writing of letters.
Audrey’s favorite song is “Sweet Sixteen,”
Although she’s a Senior and seventeen.
Her ambition is to learn to swim
So let her indulge in this worthwhile whim.
Catawba is the college where she wants to go.
And she’ll be happy there, we know.
Reading and drawing are her favorite pastimes.
And my hat off to one who makes pictures from lines.
She’s also on the Lexicon staff
And secretary of the Senior class.
We’re through with Audrey for right now.
“Zacky Boy,” it’s your turn to take a bow.
Zacky’s first love is a girl named Jane,
Then comes Macbeth and an out-of-town game;
Chocolate candy, in fact all eating in general
To help him solve problems both physical and mental.
Zacky’s pet hate is long skirts.
Then padded hips and silly flirts.
Zacky wants to go to ol’ Carolina,
’Cause he thinks there is no college finer.
Mr. mgs is Zacky’s favorite teacher;
He teaches about bugs and any creature.
Reading funny-books is his favorite pastime;
I reckon it’s ’cause they cost but a dime.
Zacky’s co-captain of the football team.
President of Quill and Scroll, too, I mean.
And he’s in the Hi-Y, heads the Senior Class,
Business Manager of the LEXICON,
And loved by each lad and lass.
Audrey and Zacky made the “Gobbler” headliner;
Could there have been any two finer?
Out for Living and follow the Trade Wind to Jonica’s Island (L.H.S. Library)
sometimes known as the Lost Horizon but which is the Citadel of a Hundred
Stairways with Stars to Steer By.
So, with a Penny for Luck take the Highroad to Adventure and follow
Green Dolphin Street into Land Below the Wind.”
The library staff had a tea for the faculty members on November 18.
Then on the next day in assembly the staff and the dramatics depiartment
under the direction of Miss Gilliam and Mrs. Fred Lewis, presented several
skits which had been taken from: “The Barets of Wimpiole Street,” by
Besier; “He Heard America Sing,” by Purdey; “River Boy,” by Proudfit, and
“Seventeenth Summer” by Daley.
The student body enjoyed and profited by the observance of book week
and appreciate the effort of those who made it possible.
