IN CHRISTMAS PARADE —ANN ROGERS Promptly at ten o’clock on the morning of December 3, Lexing ton officially ushered in the Christ mas season with one of the best parades ever presented here. L.S.H.S. students slaved over col lege board exams while Melinda Hu-fman postponed this important test to represent her school in the annual event. A large crowd braved the cold to view the parade, which con sisted of floats, bands, girls repre senting schoois and industries in the Christmas Queen Contest, and such famous personalities as Miss North Carolina, the Oid Rebel and Pecos Pete, and of course, Santa Claus. Several other girls have repre sented L.S.H.S, in beauty pageants during the past few weeks. Gail Parks was a runner up in the Miss Veterans’ Day Contest, and Judy Raykes placed third in the Miss Piedmont Contest in Thom- asville. Belinda Burke was Lex ington’s first representative in the Carolinas’ Carrousel in Char lotte. L.S.H.S. is duly proud of all her representatives, each one making an outstanding entry for her school. It will be held in the high school auditorium, and will begin at 8:00. The Junior High Band under the direction of Mr. Jerry Aiken will present the first half of the con cert. Among the nuumbers to be presented will be “Vangard of Victory”—Thomas Darcy Jr.; “Waitz of the Flowers”—Tsckai- kovsky, and “Christmas March” by Paul Hertfert. The Junior High band has worked extremely hard for this concert and they will no doubt make an excellent showing. The Lexington High School band under the direction of Mr. Lin- wood Pittman will present tiie second portion of the concert. Among the numbers they will play are “The Nutmeggers,” a concert m...rch; “Christmas Festival”- Leroy Anderson; “Gypsy”—Jule Styne; “El Capitan”-^ousa, and “Das Pensionat” by Franz Von Suppe. These numbers are sure to delight everyone’s taste in mus ic. This is the first concert to be directed by Mr. Pittman who af ter two years of successful di recting at Junior High, is the new High School director. It is also the first for Mr. Aiken, the new Junior High director. They are to be congratulated for their out standing work with the bands these past few months. Also, the Senior High Band wishes to ex press their thanks for the hard work Mr. Pittman did during the football season. He has worked hard preparing the band for this Christmas concert, and the band is working hard to make this con cert the best yet. EXCHANGE STUDENT CITIZEN OF THE MONTH —PAT HANKINS December’s deserving citizen is Monika Kolar, American Field Service Exchange Student from Vienna, Austria. Monika has already become a very familiar figure and her beaming smile and cheery “Hello” greet all who meet her! Beiinda Burke and Dan Smith Crowned As Royal Couple —TINA HILL On the day of November 23, 1960, the Tri-Hi-Y Club presented the aiuiual Coronation Bali in the auditorium. Upon this event the king and queen of L.S.H.S. were announced and crowned; also each member of the Tri-Hi-Y was presented to the court. Ihe decor of the Coronation was that of an 18th century ball room. A pale pink arch and a ghttering stairway formed a beautiful bacKgrouna for the two majestic gold and velvet thrones. A huge canaeiaora with w'mte 'tapers, was entwined with roses and comph- mencfcu me setting. Aiso the pink and green of the unusual rose trees adueu more color and fovelmess to meir elegant surroundings. Mary iviarmua Conrad was mistress of ceremony and Barbara Harris, Winxs McCurdy, Ginger Varner, Charyie McDade, Hun Phil- pott, and Eddie Holmes piesented a skit depicting the Cinderelk story. Barbara portrayeu the part of the stepmother; Winks, Anastasia; cinger, Druceiia; Eddie, Prince Sebastan, IV; Charyie, Cinderella; ana nun, the fairy godmother. Charyie sang “Someday My Prince Wih Come,” and “Some Enchanted Evening.” The dance band played as a special selection, “Shorty’s Horn.” The main event of the Coronation was the crowning of the king and queen, Behnda Ann Burke and Dan Griff Smith. “Sister” is the daughter of Mrs. J. 0. Burke and the late Mr. Burke. Dan is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Bruce Smith. The girls of the court paid special tribute to the king and queen by performing a figure. Later, “Sister” and Dan led the court in a dance which the others followed. She has outstanding talents in music and gymnastics. Her latest love, though, is horseback riding. She rode here for the first time and has found riding very much to her liking. All of her outstanding qualities have shown us that she is a truly deserving Citizen of the Month. TEENS . . . YOU CAN HELP! —PAT HANKINS This year, as in years past, January is March of Dimes month. The county chairmen are Genne Hewitt and Belinda Burke, and Phil Palisoul is leading the campaign at Lexingxon Senior High. Numerous events have been planned for this month beginrdng with a big New Year’s Eve Dance to launch the campaign. A benefit bridge has also been planned. We are all reminded to support this drive for the cause is a needy one. Any of the L.S.H.S. contribu tion will be used to the greatest advantage possible. This year the program has some thing new added to it. 'Therefore, again, it is called the New March of Dimes. This program is one of the biggest and best attempted by any organization, and again, you are reminded to do your part. ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-SIX TAKE COLLEGE BOARD EXAMS One hundred eight-six students booked for college board exams on December 3 very dutifully were absent from the beautiful Lex ington Christmas Parade, and re ported to the senior high school promptly at 8:30. By 9:00 A.M., each was settled in one of the seven classrooms under the super vision of seven local high school teachers, and a three-hour exam was in progress. Absolute quiet was observed except for the five- minute recess during the testing period. About half the enrollment was made up of Lexington Senior High students, the others having come from the surrounding high schools. The Scholastic Aptitude Test will again be administered at the Senior High School on January 14, and applications should be made before December 17.
