Hedrick MAY'S Mr. and Miss L.S.H.S. ‘YE OLD AND NEW" EDITORS’ % —CAROL CRAVER “Attempt Great Things For God” Senior Class Motto If we willed to do the worth-while things we can do, we would be quite different from what we are. God must be disappointed to see so many of us not using our brains and muscles to do the things we could do if we would. “It’s too much bother,’’ is one excuse; “It’s too much work,’’ is another; and a third is, “I haven’t time.” It would be a very stupid world if we did not have to work to accomplish things. Do you not admire and respect a person who wills to do a thing and works at it until it is accomplished? The will to do is one of the greatest powers God has bestowed upon the human mind. If we use this power, we will succeed in our “Attempt (to do) Great Things for God!” PRAYER; Dear God as we face the great challenges ahead, give us the strength and will power that comes with Faith in thee, that we may accomplish great things in our lifetime. Amen TO THE SENIORS —ANN ROGERS As we are preparing to graduate and leave the lives we have known for new and different worlds, we secretly have a little anxiety as to whether we shall be successful when we are out on our own. All through our school days we have had wonderful guidance and encouragement from our parents and teachers. Sometimes this encouragement has not been welcome, especially when we are forced to stay home and study or work instead of going out, but it has all worked toward building within us a sense of obligation that will make the difference between success and failure in the future. Our parents and teachers, however, will not always be on hand to give us a push in the right direction when we need it. In college, professors will present their subjects, and then it is up to the students themselves to spend the time and effort necessary to succeed. On the job, it is those who wiU put a little extra into their work that will be considered first when time for promotion comes. And in mar riage, very definitely the happy home is the one in which both partners are wiling to go more than half way. In this busy age, with so many demands on our time, we are more than ever enclined to try to get by with doing the least that we can; but in the future we must always remember that what we get from life wiU be determined largely by what we put into it. ■ f. '*^1 J -.m By LOIS ANN JOHNSON (Senior ) President, Library Club We, the Seniors of the Student Assistant Library StaT of the Lex ington Senior High Schol, being of supposedly sound mind and body, do hereby make our last will and testament: Item 1—To our Alma Mater, the Lexington Senior High School, we bequeath a continued, faithful interest in our school, than which we know there is none finer. Item 4—Brenda Banks, intri gued by music (especially march ing band music!) bequeaths her interest in music and the other arts to “Chippie” Everhart, with an added wish that she will have the same (and we quote “Chip pie” here) “great pleasure and enjoyment from working in the library” when she returns for her second year on the student assistant staff. Item 5—Loin Ann Johnson, des tined to become a nurse in the not-too distant future, leaves to others with similar ambition and interest her recommendation to read BRAVE NURSE, YOUR CA REER IN NURSING, and ANNE SNOW, MOUNTAIN NURSE; fur ther, Lois wills to Ellen Hinkle her own sweet manner and faith fulness to duty. Item 6—Suzanne Everhart (alas not to return to the library next year but to adorn the staff of LEXICON), as a departing mem ber of the library staff at the end of this year, is allowed to bequeath to Marilyn Lohr her fine drawing talent during Marilyn’s second year on the library staff; further, Suzanne wills to Marilyn a special “corner” on the library’s books on Cuba! Item 7—Doris Morgan, alas, alack! also not to return to the library staff since LEXHIPEP gets her next year (to their great advantage!) is also given the privilege as a departing member of our staff to herewith leave to Linda Swicegood an ever-widen ing range in reading, from OUR HEARTS WERE YOUNG AND GAY to DOCTOR ZHIVAGO and BROTHERS KARAMAZOV. Let no one violate the above document, our Last Will and Tes tament, which on this 26th day of May, 1961, we hereby set our seal and sign. Yours, Librari-Ann Librari-Andy —PAT HANKINS Relaxing after the numerous practices for graduation and Senior Assembly are Mr. and Miss L.S.H.S. for May, Carol Craver and Donnie Leonard. Miss L.S.H.S. is Carol Craver, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Craver at Magnolia Road. She has been a member of the Latin Club, Spanish Club, Tri-Hi-Y, Science Club, Beta Club, Pep Club, and has been on the LEXHIPEP staff for the past two years, serving this year as literary editor. As a freshman and sophomore, she was a Jr.-Sr. waitres, and as a junior and senior is a member of the tennis team. She received the honor of being a delegate to Girls’ State last summer, and was voted the Most Athletic by the Senior Class in the selection of superlatives. Carol would not trade places with anyone because she feels perfectly contented with things as they are now. She would visit Europe and Hawaii if she were able because she has heard so much about these countries that she would like to see them for herself. Carol’s secret ambition is to be a kindergarten teacher, and her future plans include graduating from Greensboro College. If Miss L.S.H.S. could have three wishes, she would wish for (1) World peace (2) to graduate from college, and (3) happiness for all. Carol considers our school’s greatest needs to be glass basketball backboards and new nets for the tennis courts. “Till” is Miss L.S.H.S.’s favorite song, and Frank Sinatra is her favorite singer. Her favorite movies are “The Apartment,” and “Ben-Hur’, with James Stewart being her favorite actor. A MAN CALLED PETER is her favorite bok, and “Surfside Six” is her favorite television program. Carol’s favorite food is steak (isn’t almost everybody’s?), and her favorite pastime is playing tennis. English is her favorite subject, and narrow-minded people is her pet peeve. Donnie Leonard, Mr. L.S.H.S. for May, is the popular treasurer of the Senior Class. During his freshman year he was the Student Council representative, and served as Secretary during Ms sophomore year. He is a member of the Demolay, Monogram Club, Beta Club, and has been in the Latin Club. He was the captain of the basketball team and is Sports editor of the LEXHIPEP. Donnie would also not trade places with anyone, as he, too is content with his present identity. He would visit a small South Sea Island so he could get away from it all. Donnie considers our gretest need to be glass backboards, also. Mr. L.S.H.S.’s secret ambition is to design boats in Florida, and his future plans include going to Wake Forest College and studying business administration and law. Donnie’s most embarrassing moment was when he accidentally kicked the trash basket across Mrs. Berry’s room. “The 'Theme from the Apartment” is his favorite song, and The Dukes of Dixieland is his favorite musical group. “Ben-Hur” is his favorite movie, and James Stewart and Kim Novak are his favorte movie stars. His favorite book is THE ROBE, and “Wagon Train” and “Rocky and his Friends” are his favorite television programs. Barbequed chicken is his favorite food, and his favorite pastime is going to the lake. His favorite subject is Mstory, and his pet peeve is homework. L.S.H.S. wishes the very best for these seniors and hopes that all their future days will be happy and prosperous ones.
