Mildred Gee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Felix Gee, has been voted by the House of Represer.- tatives as May’s Citizen of the Month. Mildred is active in many school activities. She is a mem ber of the National Honor So ciety, Spanish Club, Science Club, and Tri-HFY, of which she’s secretary. She was a m.ember of the cast of the senior play. She is also a member of the LEXHi- PEP staff, serving last year as Exchange Editor, and this year as Literary Editor. Hearty congratulations go to Maidred who is highly deserving of this fine honor. SENIOR DINNER HELD MAY 24TH — Tony Wike The final highlight for the soc ial events during the senior year, the annual Senior Dinner, was held May 24. at seven o’clcek at the Lexington Municipal Club. Since 1948, when the idea of giving a dinner was first start ed by the parents of the Presi dent of the Senior Class, Bob Hendricks, it has become one of the mc-st eageriy anticipated social events of the senior year. The first Senior Dinner was so successful that it has become an annual affair. This year the mothers of the senior class officers — Kenny Swing, Jchnny Fritts, Charies Bullaboy, and Noel Monphis — wil serve as a central commit tee. They are Mrs. A. G. Swing, Mrs. John Fritts, Mrs. L. A. Bullaboy, and Mrs. J. W. Mor- phis, Jr. Assisting these four will be many other mothers cf seniors. The president of the Senior Class, Kenny Swing, will pre side at the dinner. Committee chairmen are as follow: decora tions, Suzanne Everhart; invi tations, Sue Hilton; entertain ment, Mary Louise Baney dance, Mildred Gee. Besides a delicious dinner, there will be entertainment pro vided by talented members of the senior class. Special guests for the occasion will be senior homer;om teachers, school offi cials, and the senior class spon- sors-Mrs. Ottis Hedrick, Miss Charlotte Matthews, Mr. Carrcll Bowen,, and Mr. David Hol- comibe. After the dinner, a dance will be held for the seniors and their guests. This year Lexington Senior High School is priviledged to have two winners in the annual Civitan Essay Contest. 'The topic th's year was “Democracy vs. Communisum As a Way of Life”, and uinda Sue Swicegood’s paper on this topic won first place, and Charles Bernhart’s v/on third place in the county division. These students and their teachers were guests of honor at the Civitan meeting held May 22, and at this time they read their winning es says. They were also presented with prizes of $25 and $10 re spectively, and it was announced that the winner wouid be entered into further competition. On May 16 the Monogram Club held its final athletic awards as sembly. Two members of the club, Maxey Sanderson and Char les Crouse, gave the devotions, alter which the program was turnec. over to Lamar Clark, the club president. Next came the presentation of the letteps and stars to the men lettering in a sport. The coach es of their respective sports presented these. The following boys received ietters from Coach Bob Callicutt. Basketball: Jimmy Snyder, Char les Crouse, Joe Hornbuckle, Doug Pritchard, Johnny Bumgarner, Tommy Grayson, Nolan Leonard, Richard Johnson, Nicky Dry’ Spencer Crowell, Charles Bern hardt, Benny Parker, and Dan ny Parker. Again this year LSHS is proud to number nine of its most out standing students in the annual Who’s Who among the High Schools of America. The persons honored this year are Seniors Charles Bernhardt, Neel Mor- phis, John Leonard, Laurvn Ku- gel, Kenny Swing, Pat Hankins, Putt” Conrad, Marie Moore- field and Junior, Jimmy Snyder. The “Who’s Who” serves to bring recogniticn and honor to. outstanding high school students who have shown qualities of leadership throughout their school careers. A copy of the volume will be sent to the library at LSHS and to any student who wishes to purchase cue. Congratulations are extended to these _ deserving students on their achievement! Other Civitan awards were made this afternoon in assem bly to Judy Cameron, who re- ce..^ed a $100 scholarship, and to Dick Bagby, the outstanding citizen of our school. Congratulations to these fine and deserving students, and best of luck both now and in the fu ture. For Wrestling, coaches Price and Johnny Rhodes gave the fol lowing letters: Delate Atkins, Jimmy Oakley, Gerald Lineberg- er, Jimmy Cox, Charles Call, Mitchie Harb, Danny Wood, Ron nie Leonard, Ronnie Hedrick, Chip Craver, Thompson Miller’ Johnny Shoaf, Foster Owen, Jake Billings, Harvey Fullbright, and Steve Everhart. ’ It was a dignified and inspir ing moment as the 1962 gradu ating class marched into the audi torium for Senior Asseiubly to day. Kenny Swing, class presi dent, led the procession, follow ed by Johnny Fritts, vice presi dent, Charles BuUaboy, secretary, and Noel Morphis treasurer. The devotions were presented by Rusty Ward. Then ]VIr. L. E. Andrews delivered the invoca tion. Kenny Swing, Senior Class pres ident was the master of cere monies for the delightfully varied program. Senior taxent was dis- pilayed as Carol Myers and “Hun” Philpott played a organ and piano duet “Because”. Mar tha Michael also a senior en tertained by playing an organ solo “Ave Maria”. The band, un der the capable direction of JHr. Darrell Pittman, played the traditional “Processional” and “Recessional”, and also two special numbers. The 1962 class electives — Doris Morgan, poet; Charles Bernhart, Historian; Rusty Ward, Prophet; and Gary Ball, Testator — were then in troduced. Doris Morgan read the class poem “A Parable of Suc cess.” Next came the much anticipated presentation of awards and scholarships to deserving seniors. They were as follows: UDiC, BPW, 0. Henry Short Story, National Honor Society Medal, Lexington Music Study Club, Civitan Scholarship and citizenship award. Rotary Club Scholarship, Credit Woman’s Breakfast Club Scholarship, Rich ard Walser Book Club Awai’ds, Spanish Club Awards, and the Tri-Hi-Y Scholarship. The dedication of the LEXHI PEP, an important feature of the assembly was made by the editor, Pat Hankins. The sixteen page edition was dedicated to Mrs. Ottis Hedrick, esteemed teacher, friend, and LEXHIPEP sponsor. For Baseball, Coiach Carroll Bowen gave letters to Nicky Dry, Lamar Clark, Nolan Leon ard, Tommy Grayson, Johnny Fritts, Jimmy Call, Richard Johnson, Johnny Bumgarner, Pat McGinn, Harvey Fullbright, Tommy Gobble, Mike Davis, Barry Lee, Marlett Goodrum, Jack Yarbrough, Sherill Bum garner, Ken Conrad, Charles Bullaboy, and Greg Leonard. The golf boys getting letters from Coach Price were Bill Hali, Guy Smjith, Joe Hornbuckle, Claude Reynolds, David Sechrist, and Danny Parker. Coach Frank King awarded the track letters to Noel Mor phis, Tony Ratia, Mickey Deese, Sammy Prevette, Teddy Royster, Harry Goforth, Maxey Sander son, Ricky Rhodes, Larry Beck, Johnny Clark, and freshman Donnie Knepper. The managers also received a letter. They were Mike Daniel and Dobin Callahan. Members of the Junior Varsity Basketball team were recognized for their fine effort. They were Pat Mc- Gin, Hugh Bingham, Jimmy Mc- Cutcheon, Larry Evans, Johnny Clark, Charles Murdock, Jimmy Saunders, Alan Palisoul, Durante Griffith, Stephen Everhart, and Ronnie Tesh. The coaches’ sportsmanship trophy was awarded to Sherrill Bumgarner for his excellent sportsmanship throughout his year at LSHS.
