April 2, 1963 THE LEXHIPEP Page 7 NEWS BRIEFS (Continued from Page 1) Debaters Lose At High Point On March 13, four Lexington debaters took part in a tourna ment held at High Point Central High School. Along with the Lex ington debaters were debaters from Reynolds High of Winston- Saicm, Williams High of Burling ton, High Point Central of Hign Point, and Page High of Greens boro. The query this year is “Re solved; That the United States should promote a Common Mar ket for the Western Hemisphere." Bob Philpott and Ed Zimmerman represented the negative while Bebs Mann and Nancy Miller chose the affirmative. First place was won by Rey nolds High, giving them tne chance to participate in the dis trict debates later this month. The Lexington debaters will also participate in the Wake Fcrest College Tournament to be held on March 29 and 30. Bob Philpott and Ed Zimmer man will represent the varsity negative; Elizabeth Gee and Jane Myers will represent the novice negative. Bebs Mann and Betty Hemphill are the varsity affirmative while Glenn Talbert and Nancy Miller represent the novice affirmative. This year the Wake Forest rules for this tournament have been changed, thus allowing only eight debaters to participate. m "Parents' Night Observed By Deca Club Fifteen members of the Lex ington Distributive Education were host to parents at their February meeting held February 25 at Lexington Senior High School. A social and get-acquaint ed period was held. At this time, parents examined displays made by Anita Lewder, McLellans; Janet Snyder, W. T. Grant; Dar- eii Reavis, Peoples Drug; Bob Melton and Tommy Meador, Winn-Dixie; and Linda Drake’ Emma Sue Tadlock, Ray Tysing- er. National Wholesale. Recognition was given te a DE Bulletin Board created by Anita Lowder, Brenda Mode, and Janet Snyder. Guest speaker for the evening was Mr. Edward Becken of the Davidson County Industrial Cen ter. Mr. Becken discussed the function of the center, the cur riculum, and the educational op- portunlaes for both high school graduates and adults already employed who desire to upgrade themselves in their chosen oc cupations or who desire to ac quire training in a new field. Mr. Becken showed an interest ing film entitled “Your Horizons Unlimited.” The club members voted to ap propriate an expense account of $4 per person for each member attending the State Leadership Conference in Asheville March 15 and 16. Those attending as delegates are Bob Melton, Lon nie Felts and Linda Drake. Anita Lowder will represent the club in the DE Queen Contest. Career Night Held at LSHS Annual Career Night was held at LSHS on Tuesday night, March 26. Students from LSHS and the nearby Davidson Coun ty schools attended three class sessjc'us Of their choice. The classes were led by outstanding Lexing-ton businessmen who ex plained in detail the nature of their work to the students. The Career Night program is design ed to acquaint the student with the type of career he has indi cated an interest in. This event is headed by Mrs. Hussey and the House of Representatives. New Library Display A “Circus of Fun” displaying varied interests is the main ex hibit in the school library this month. All faculty members and as mainy students from the four classes as space would permit have been invited to enter this Circus of Fun. Although no prizes are being offered, the quality and quantity of the entries are excellent. Some are examples of creativity, such as writing, paint ing, drawing, and the like. The entries range from examples of sewing, knotting, and monogram.- ming to flower arrangements, paintings, drawings, models of cars, scrapbooks, guns, and tools (handmade). Where no object could be displayed, the staff has made colorful and attractive posters to depict the special in terest of the exhibitor. SHARPE Mrs. Donald Sharpe has return ed to Lexington Senior High School replacing Mrs. Vince Olenick. Mrs. Sharpe is teaching freshman English here as she did a few years ago. The entire school is happy to welcome her back as an asset to the faculty. L.S.H.S. is indeed fortunate to have a teach er of Mrs. Sharpe’s calibre, and one who is familiar with the the school routine, to return.
