WHS Bulldogs Shock AAA Conference
W. H. S. cagers have shown their
strength in the Western AAA Con
ference. coming from a 1-5 pre-season
record. Then the Greensboro Whirles
with a fine team, both on offense
and defense, out-classed the Bulldogs
in a 33-29 victory. This was the
Bulldogs' first conference loss.
FIRST LEAGUE WIN
The Bulldogs opened league play
by playing host to the Green Wave
of Gastonia. At the final horn the
game was tied and it went into an
overtime period. In this overtime Ken
Rhodes connected with a free throw
to make it 50 to 49. Then Bowes and
Oakley made shots from the floor and
Stewart stripped the net with a free
throw to make the final score 54-50
in favor of the Bulldogs.
BEAT DEFENDING CHAMPS
With fine ball handling and a high
shooting percentage, the Bulldogs de
feated Salisbury, the defending West
ern AAA champs. With a 53-45 score,
Benny Bowes was high scorer with
19 followed by George Oakley with
12. Sparking the Salisbury attack was
Eddie Kessler, left forward, with 13
points.
BULLDOGS WHIP ASHEVILLE
The Bulldogs came out on top
again with fine team work and the
hook shot Bowes has worked so well
this year. The key to the game was
the fine ball handling by the guards,
Truitt and Stewart, and the good per
centage at the free throw line by the
Bulldogs. The final score was 53 for
Bulldogs and 51 for Asheville.
DOWN HIGH POINT
With victory in mind, the W. H.
S. cagers entered the new High Point
gym.The High Pointers had a 4-0
record until the quintet from Burling
ton put a black mark on it to give
them a 4-1 record and to give the
Bulldogs a 4-0 record. Oakley had
the combination to score at the free
throw line, hitting 13 out of 15 tries.
While Truitt from the outside kept
the net warm with 17 points.
WILDCATS INVADE GYM
Back at home the W. H. S. cagers
played host to the Charlotte Wild
cats. The Wildcats had and kept the
lead until the fourth period. Then
the Bulldogs applied the pre.ssure in
the right places and came out on top
again with a 47-36 victory over the
hard fighting cagers from Charlotte.
FIFTH IN ROW
The question, when the Bulldogs
played host to Winston-Salem, was
how good would they be able to play
under height. This was concerning
the center. Fred Fowler, 6 foot 9.
But this was answered very quickly
by the fine defense and offense of
the Bulldogs. Bowes was high scorer
for W. H. S. with 29 followed by
Jerry Evans and Fred Fowler from
Winston with 12 each.
BULLDOGS HALTED
The 6-0 winning streak was cut off
by Greensboro with a 33-29 defeat.
At times, the Whirlies had four men
guarding Bowes, the Bulldogs center.
This cut his score to 6 points. The
strategy of the Bulldogs could not
come up to the strategy used by
Greensboro that night. The high scor
er was Edgar Sockwell from Greens
boro with 12 points and close at his
heels was Billy Stewart with 10.
SHOW VICTORY SPIRIT
Bulldogs stayed in the background
until the fourdi quarter, then at the
final horn the game was tied at 44
all. In the overtime White made 4
points for Gastonia and for the Bull
dogs Oakley made 4 and Bowes and
Stewart added 3 together making it a
51-48 victory for the Williams team.
BULLDOGS FALL SHORT
The W. H. S. cagers fell short in
the first half having scored 2 points,
which were free throws made by
Oakley and Bowes, compared with 15
points of Salisbury. In the third and
fourth periods, the Bulldogs started
applying the pre.ssure, but it was too
late. Salisbury gave Burlington its
second conference defeat with a 33-28
score.
