July, 1973 ANNUAL EMPLOYEE PICNIC AUGUST 4TH- FUN FOR EVERYONE THEME The big annual employee picnic is scheduled for August 4th from 10 AM till 6 PM at the Guion Farm. Terrell Orr, 1973 Picnic Chair man, is busy with a long list of prep arations to make this years’ picnic a success. His objective is to make the picnic "Fun For Everyone”. DERA members are pitching in to help set up and run the many events scheduled to please family participants both young and old. Contests will include balloon blowing, horseshoes, foot race, log sawing, shoe scramble, balloon burst, tow sack race, backward race, golf pitch, 3-legged race, wheelbarrow race, egg toss, and pie eating. Win ners will receive silver dollar awards. Two or three additional games featuring family competition are also being considered to give variety. Other events include pony rides, bingo (with numerous prizes), soft- ball, the Biltmore Train, a treasure hunt, a door prize, bean guessing. the greasy pole climb, and a fishing contest. A time schedule of contests and events will be distributed at the gate house the week of the picnic. Food, ice cream, and drinks will be served from 11 AM to 6 PM. Four lines will be set up to speed up service. The main fare will be hot dogs, ham burgers, baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad, and all the trimmings. Children will receive helium filled balloons. Swings and a new 12-foot sliding board will be available for the more energetic youngsters. A 10-foot square sand box is also being con structed for tiny tots. You and your family are invited to follow the Du Pont Picnic signs from the Du Pont Road turnoff just above Shoals Falls Farm, park your car in the parking area, sign your name in the register, and then let your family loose for a day of "Fun For Everyone” at the 1973 Plant Picnic. If they ask you to take part and share the load, please help them if you can. FISH HAVE SHORT FEAST The trout had a short feast on the redworms John Brinkley (Con trol Lab, A Shift) and his 14 year old nephew, David, offered them in mid-July. The feast was shortened by 14 tugs on two lines to bring in fish ranging up to 16 inches in length. John and David spent from 7 to 11 AM on July 13th netting their limit. John said he believed David sighted his fish underwater...he fell in 5 times. Incidently, David caught the 16 incher. Reflecting on his successful fish ing trip John said, "It’s really nice that we’ve got the facilities right here at the plant to fish, camp, and go hiking for outdoorsmen who love to do these things.” John Brinkley and Nephew David AUGUST 4TH—THE BIG PICNIC EAT AND PLAY ALL DAY “FUN FOR EVERYONE”
