CAFETERIA CHANGES PLANNED

Once upon a time, in the days before
computer billing and vending machines,
some people believed that machines
would eventually run the world. Today,
most of us think differently.
Although many folks drive long dis
tances to play slot machines, the element
of chance doesn't seem to have the same
charm when you drop a coin in the
vending machine. Sometimes it's de
pressing to watch the cup fall after the
coffee has been poured down the chute,
and buttermilk just won't do if you
missed the button for chocolate milk to
go with your cookies. If you've been
missing the good old days when you could
buy food from a human being, we have
good news.
A project has been approved to elimi
nate vending machines from the plant
cafeteria. In their place will be a system
called the 'Macke Mart', which will oper
ate much like a small grocery store.
Cashiers will be on duty at all times,
eliminating problems with coins and
coin returns.
You select the item you want from
the displays which will be located on
two aisles in the same area which is now
enclosed by the "cage". There will be
shelves with bakery products and other
non-refrigerated items. Dairy items will
be available from a cooler, and each aisle
will have an Ice Cream box with frozen
products. A "build your own" salad
bar will be a permanent feature.
There will be no change in the present
hot entree and sandwich service. For
those who bring their own lunch, the
microwave cookers will be located closer
to the lunch box shelves, and the hot
water sink will be relocated adjacent to
the refrigerators. Congestion will be
further relieved by having two condi
ment tables, one on either side of the
lunch room.
Behind the scenes, kitchen facilities
will be expanded by moving northward
on the west side of the cafeteria. The
area presently occupied by vending
machines will be walled off even with
the present gateway into the serving
area. This will eliminate one row of ta
bles from the present arrangement.
These tables will be moved to the east
side, into the area currently used for
vending machines. There will be no net
change in seating capacity, only a rear
rangement. The end result will be a
much improved food preparation area.
During construction, however, there
may be a need to have your lunch at a
slightly different time in order to find a

seat. The changes will not involve any
long delays or major work, but we can
count on some growing pains while the
job is being done.
When it's all over, sometime in March
by current estimate, things should go
better for us. You pick the item you
want to buy, give the money to a real
live person, and never have your dollar
refused or see a "sold out" light.
Somehow the giant step backward
sounds like progress. Maybe computers
are here to stay, but it's reassuring to
have the human touch when you go for
a snack or a meal.
Note: Don't forget that vending
machines are being used in the Coating
Area break room and also will be installed
in the new Casting Area break room.
