FOTOFAX BREVARD PLANT PHOTO PRODUCTS DEPARTMENT John FOCUS: SEASON'S GREETINGS I look forward to this time of year. First, it is the season when Christians celebrate the birth of Christ. Secondly, it is a time when we look back over the past year and count our many blessings. Thirdly, it is a time to reflect on those things we want to change during the coming New Year. I am grateful that none of our employees suffered serious injury on the job. Several incidents occurred which were cause for concern. These events had the potential for disastrous injuries, but fortunately our employees came through unharmed. From a business point of view, the plant enjoyed a fine year. Volumes remained stable, and we continued to maintain steady employment. This comes at a time when many industries are buried deeply in a recession. There are uncertainties ahead, but our overall x-ray business situation should continue steady in the months ahead. May the joys of this blessed season be yours in the days to come. MECHANICS FINISH APPRENTICESHIP When the latest graduates of the Mechanic Training Program received their "di plomas" from John Golden, it was more than a ceremony to mark their completion of three years' work. The "Certificate of Completion" is an official document issued by the N.C. De partment of Labor, which has evaluated and approved the program. Perhaps even more importantly, the "Hands-On" training has the approval of the trainees—"Don’t say 'trainee' again," said one graduate. "I'm trained; all I need is experience!" "This is a good system," says Jerry Stamey. "The Hands-On Approach puts things into the real world, rather than on a blackboard; and the way we present scho lastic material allows each person to absorb the information at their own best pace." What is "Hands-On" training? A good example is the place where these 9 mechan ics received their certificates: the building, except for steelwork and the concrete pad, was built and finished by mechanics now in training — the class of '84. PLANT TEAMS WIN "Y" RACE Du Pont teams took first and third places in the "First Annual Corporate Fitness Relay Race" sponsored by the Hendersonville YMCA. The first place team, Nina Burrell, Tom Fitzgerald, Steve McIntosh, and Jim Sheppard, came in with a solid win in the 10 kilometer run. Their time of 35 min utes, 28 seconds was almost 2 minutes faster than the second place G.E. team at 37 minutes, 25 seconds. Third place was a near miss for Dietrich Fabricius, Steve Norton, Ron Pagano, and Pat Wilson. They finished only 13 seconds behind the second place team, at 37:38. 21 corporate teams entered the competition. Each team was composed of 3 men and 1 woman; each member ran one fourth of the race, 2,500 meters, slightly over 114 miles. To sponsor the teams, participating companies paid an entry fee of $100 per team. The YMCA will use the money to help equip their new fitness center with equipment to provide complete fitness evaluations, including blood pressure, heart rate, muscle condition, and aerobic capacity.
