PURPLE WHIRLWIND CLASHES
WITH OLD TIME RIVAL IN A
HAR DROUGHT BATTLE
(Continued from Page 1)
tied with Winston 7 to 7 in a hard fought
battle at Cone Park. Greensboro Avas
hajidieapped by the lack of Jody Transou,
left tackle, and the entire team shoAved less
pep than Avas shown when they defeated
Win.ston 7 to 0 in Winston.
A forAvard pass, an end run, and a series
of cross tricks gaA-e Winston the first score
of the game near the beginning of the sec
ond quarter. In these plays Winston show
ed a lot of pep and teamAvork.
Greensboro did not score until the third
quarter Avhen Daniel to.ssed a pass to Ford-
ham Avho ran 20 yards through a broken
field for a touchdown. Daniel added the
cherislied point Avhen he kicked the ball
squarely through the goal posts.
Throughout the entire game the visitors
outfought the locals except near the end
of the first hair AA’hcn Greensboro got the
ball and advanced it .steadily down the
field, making first doAvn after fir.st doAvn.
When the Avhistle blew it looked as though
she must score. But this Avas the only time
the Whirlwind shoAved signs of its old
form.
In the first quarter both teams Avere un
able to hold the pig.skin. Greensboro kick
ed to Whnston Avho fumbled the ball in the
first scrimmage, and Greensboro received
it. Then Greensboro advanced the ball
until there AA-as three yards to go on the
4th doAvn but Avas penalized 5 yards for
offside and tried a drop-kick. The kick
failed, the ball going to Winston on her
20-yard line. Winston fumbled again and
Greensboro recovered. Greensboro fum
bled and recovered and advanced the ball
to Winston’s 10-yd line and was penalized
again, and again failed a drop kick. Win
ston then punted out of danger. During
this lAart of the game cliances looked ripe
for a Greensboro score, but the men Avere
not playing the ball they should huAm play
ed. Winston AAmrked the hall into their
territory, making their score in the second
quarter possible.
Sellars and Henderson, Greensboro ends,
stood out Avith keen defensive work, and
Barker, Taylor and Green held well in the
line although Winston made big holes in
our line. Daniel still had a Av-orld of force
but Avas sloAver than he usually is. Me-
Michael showed up Avell in the visitors ’ line
Avhile Sapp and CaldAA’ell Avere tlie center
of attack.
