KATHERINE GREGORY Katharine Gregory, a very popular and attractive senior of the class of ’23, was chosen sponsor of the basketball team of 1923. | ' YVONNE STINNETT j Here’s to “Pete” Stinnett, one of ] the best basketball players in North Carolina. “Pete” has played ' ! on the varsitiy squad for the past ' two years as center. This year she [ I was captain and a good one. This j is “Pete’s” last year at G. H. S. and we regret to see her go. MARGARET MEYERS Margaret Mv^yers has played on the varsity squad for the past two years and what is better still she will be with us another year. When Margaret pb-'vs, she plays as if her life depended upon that game. She is one of our best forwards and is noted for putting “pep” into the game. Margaret is our next year’s captain. if * * HELEN CLAPP “Hec,” as we all know, is good in Basketball but we also know that she has the school spirit. She is in for anything good and decid edly against anything harmful to the school. If more Helen Clapps were here the school would have a spirit surpassed by no other. Helen always has a smile and that wins. BRUCE GREEN Bruce Greene is probably the most popular boy in High School. He has been twice captain of football, and twice of baseball. He isn’t only an athelete, but an all-round good fellow. They don’t grow any better. *. * * KENNETH WILLIAMS Kenneth Williams, better known as “Knot,” has been elevated to lead the basketball five for next year. “Knot” is an all-round athlete, be ing a thrice-letter man and always makes a big hit on the basketball court by his clean and accurate play ing. With Captain “Knot” back on tlie court next year, we have great hopes for the state championship. EARL SELLARS Earl Sellars is one of G. IL S’s best athletes. Perhaps he is going to be one of the few three-letter men. “Dude” was this year’s cap tain of the basketball team, be ing elected to fill “Knot’s” shoes, and he certainly did his job well. He has been at G. H. S. three years and is liked by everyone. He is always right there with his ready laugh and jokes. * BUSTER SWIFT, When it comes to athletics just mention the name of Buster Swift and “nuf-sed.” All the others take a back seat. Besides being the best athlete at G. H. S. he’s also one of the most popular boys and an all round good sport. If we only have him back next year, we’ll win ’em all. Here’s to Buster! Forgiven A small stream of sunlight came irhrough a grating of a tiny window high in the wall of a dingy prison cell. Its tiny gleam fell on a young man, kneeling before a cross. He was praying, fervently and earn estly. Praying for deliverance, for forgiveness. He had done wrong, it is true, and he was willing to be punished accordingly, but he had not done anything to be treated this way—prison for five years, and then —death! He had been in here for over four years, he had marked the days with little crosses on the wall, and he was waiting in the agony of suspence for the day when he should go out with the guard, go to face the Great Beyond. He had waited so long and had put so maTiy crosses on the wall, that he had forgotten what day it was. He knew it was spring, for yesterday there had been a strong wind and an apple blossom had blown in through the window. He felt a new thrill, a new hope when he pressed it to his lips. It was as if a little white angel had flown in to cheer and lielp him. He had tender!) placed it before the cross and prayed over it, and then he had pressed it to his bosom. It was still there when the warden gruffly ordered him out. His heart leaped to his throat, he choked, and felt as if he could not make his feet go. His cheeks flushed, and his lips turned scarlet. He went on, firm in the belief that if not on earth, he would find pardon in heaven. . A queer cloud hung over . the prison, and after it was all over a single beam of light fell on his bosom, 0.1 the snow-white blossom. It was just six o’clock in the morn ing and the bells rang out, pro claiming the day—Easter! And the soul of a sinner ascended to God. —Annabel Sheperd. JUNIOR LIBRARY Seventeen—Junior Class.
