the richest nation, but there is more
chances to earn a living here than any
other country in the world. We should
be thankful for that. We are at peace
with out fellow-man. We do not realize
how horrible war is until we get into it.
We can feel our power more when we
are peaceful because of our power.
Ours is the land of opportunity. Ameri
ca is the Melting Pot for others. In it
we may do as we like and are happy. We
are in a position to help other people.
We must remember that these blessings
bring responsibilities. Let us remem
ber as Kipling in “Lest We Forget.”
Miss Aleece Sapp sang two solos.
Two scenes from “The Courtship of
Miles Standish,” the scene in which
Miles Standish asks John Alden to pro
pose to Priscilla Mullen for him, and the
one in which Alden asks her, were pre
sented.
Michaux Crocker took the part of
Miles Standish, John Larkins, that of
John Alden, and Elizabeth Smith played
the part of Priscilla Mullen, while Mil
dred Michaux read the action between
the scenes.
Miss Beckwith was faculty chairman
of this program.

may be piling up his money in order
that he may alleviate human sufferings,
that he may build a home for orphaned
children, and that he may build institu
tions for higher education and the up
lift of humanity. Mr. Carnegie said
that the man that dies rich in this coun
try is a disgrace.
“Business is interwoven with senti
ment. Large business houses are largely
controlled by sentiment. Men bend over
their desks because of the sentiment that
controls their business. While he looks
at the list of figures that are before him,
there floats over his vision an institution
where men and women may live in com
fort.”
The speaker continued with this story:
“Here comes along a fellow who is a
lawyer. He says to his son: T want you
to be a lawyer.’ You know it is the
most inspiring thing in the world for a
father to have a boy take up the work
where he laid it down. So the boys went
down to the university and stayed one
term. Then he said to his father, ‘Fa
ther, I do not want to be a lawyer. I
want to go out to Kansas to bind wheat.’
So he bound wheat, and later got to
digging ditches, but he made enough
money to get him back home.
“Now he has a responsible position in
a large commercial house in New York.
He simply had two ears, two eyes, two
nostrils. He profited by that experi
ence. The reason why more people do
not succeed in business is because tliey
do not have the same.”
One of the most worthwhile messages
Mr. Ireland left was:
41
“There is a destiny in every life. No
man however situated should forget
that there is an over-ruling Providence
that shapes each man’s destiny. Some
people never find their niche that God
intended for them because they have
never seen, never heard, never smelt the
things they should. Others make use
of their facilities and find the niche that
fits them in the great plan of God’s
plan for the world.”
