In other words, be simple, direct, and sincere. Your speech will prove your true character.” At each of the three chapel exercises Helen Felder’s prize play, “The Con queror,” was presented. Martha Broad- hurst and Bob Stone, as the wise and good rulers of the Land of Fair Speech; Margaret Irvin as Complex Sentence, the beautiful vampire; and Vernell Hack ney as Compound Sentence, were all in their native elements. Julius Witten as Simple Sentence kept the audience in a constant uproar. The skillful manipu lation of Simple’s neckpiece was fully ap preciated. Applause was instantly forth coming at each wiggle. The performance of Michaux Crocker as Student was near perfect. The Student by overcoming every obstacle to Good Speech eventu ally became the Conqueror. Elizabeth Hodgin recited “Miss Good English,” her clever parody on “Little Orphan Annie.” In addition to the chapel exercises, the English classes carried on work pertain ing to Better Speech; each member of the various classes was required to make a Better Speech poster. The results were surprising, for a quantity of hidden tal ent was brought to light. The posters were placed in every vacant space at the High School where the students were permitted to admire them. The best of these were later moved to the Greensboro Book Store. A prize was offered by the Torchlight Society for the best play concerning Bet ter Speech. Helen Felder’s “Tbe Con queror” won first place. Betty Harri son, president of the society, presented the prize, a collection of Tennyson’s po ems, on Friday in the presence of the student body. Rated by State Department of Education as Class A, entitling a graduate to receive a teacher’s highest grade certificate.
