OLD KING EDWARDS
Old King Edwards
TUos a stern old soul,
And a stern old soul was he;
He called for his ruler,
And he called for Miss Hyams,
And he called for his scholars tardee.
Every scholar had a fine excuse;
A very fine excuse had he.
There’s nothing so rare
That can compare
With King Edwards and his scholars
tardee.
Mrs. Atwater, indignant to find her
son very low in his class at school, ex
claimed wrathfully: “I am out of pa
tience with you, John. I should like to
know why Carlton Wilder is always at
the head of his class, while you are al
ways at the foot?”
John hesitated for a moment, and then
looking his mother straight in the face,
he said innocently: “You forget that
Carlton has very clever parents.”
CALLED HIM NAMES
One of the big store men walked into
a ladies store and said, “I want to get
a set of ladies’ furs. That brown set in
the window will do.”
To which the salesman said, “Oh, you
mean skunk.”
And the salesman is still in the hos
pital.
TALKS BY GREENSBORO
HIGH STUDENTS FEATURE
YOUTHS’ MASS MEETING
(Continued from page one)
made up of eight “Be’s.” Be honest, for
that is the best policy; be efficient, for
every business man wants an efficient em
ployee; be courteous, for courtesy makes
friends; be generous, for no one admires
a stingy person; be optimistic, for no one
likes a grouch; be reliable, for that leads
on to bigger things; be appreciative, for
everyone, even employers, like apprecia
tion; be whole-hearted, and put yourself
into everything you desire to attain.
“Making Life Count Through the
Home” was Lois Gillespie’s topic. We
only have one life to live and one great
opportunity, she said. The early part
of our lives is spent in the home, and
no one appreciates courtesy and thought
fulness more than our family. A fine
motto for every boy and girl is, “Re
member thy Creator in the days of thy
youth.” This part of our lives should
be made as fruitful as possible, and
much of our time should be spent in
bringing others to Christ. We should
win the soul, not by what we say but
by the way we live.
James Williams spoke on “Making
Life Count Through the Church.” This
affords a wide field to all who really want
to work, he declared, and its purpose is
twofold: first, to win souls; second, to
help those already in the church. He
brought out the numerous organizations
that the church has in order to keep up
the interest and zeal for Work. He
begged all to remember Macaulay’s well
known saying, “What you are speaks
so loud that I cannot hear what you say.”
The last speaker was Dr. Percy R.
Hayward, who took as his subject, “Folks
Who Count and Some Who Merely Fig
ure.” Dr. Hayward has spoken all over
the country, and he said that one ques
tion which he is always asked is, “Are
the young peope of today sliding?” His
answer was, “No! No more than they
ever did.” Then he went on to say that
those who slide are the figureheads in
every generation, while the man who
counts is backed by a motive, a purpose
which is the result of real work and ad
vantages of an all-round life. This fact
was brought out by examples from his
own experiences, and the only person who
really counted was the one who had the
qualities he had mentioned.
The rest of his talk was taken up in
explaining and describing several sum
mer camps which have been started for
the purpose of promoting an interest in
religious education. As North Carolina
has never sent any folks to these camps
he hoped that this summer he would wel
come a great number of boys and girls
from the Old North State.
