Friday night, February 19, at the
Guilford Colllege gym the Leaksville
High School basketball quint defeated
the Greensboro High School five by the
score of 42 to 27. Greensboro, although
outplayed by their opponents put up
a hard fight, but were unable to over
come tlie lead which Leaksville piled
up in the first quarter. This game
gives Leaksville the right to enter the
finals for the Western North Carolina
Championship.
Leaksville started the scoring in the
first minute of play, and piled a good
lead which Greensboro could not over
come. The outstanding stars for the
victors were Chambers, right forward,
and Crouch, left forward.
G. H. S. put up one of the hardest
fights seen on Guilford court this year,
but could not overcome the lead which
Leaksville had made in the first half.
Solomon shot eight field goals and played
a fine game. J. Watson came through
with two pretty shots from mid-court.
The other members of the quintet play
ed a good game of basketball, but were
simply outplayed by tlieir rivals.
G. H. S. offers no alibi, for the game
was clean and hard fought by both
teams.

REIDSVILLE WINS OVER
GREENSBORO GIRLS 19-17
Friday night, February 12, lleidsville
topped the score of the Purj^le Whirl
winds 19 to 17 on the former's court.
To alertness and uniformity of motion
Reidsville owed its victory.
The Greensboro guards did eVen air
work, but the forwards seemed unable
to cage the ball. The Reidsville team
had good guards and forwards who
seemed anxious to place the ball.
For Reidsville, Wray stuck on the
job; Whitsette seemed drawn toward
the ring. The captain continually drib
bled the ball across center line. For
Greensboro, Watson stuck to the ball, and
Michaux got the ball and placed it.
Whitsette carried away scoring hon
ors by making 13 points for her team.

The aspirants for the Greensboro High
School baseball team will be called out

of February.
Coltrane and Johnson, former Caro
lina and Wake Forest men, will coach
the team this year, and while a good
many of last year's regulars will not
be back, the school is looking forward
to a successful season. Coltrane is opti
mistic about the team's having five let
ter men from last year’s squad. Two
of these men. Brewer and Burgess, are
in the catching department. Brewer
is a dependable catcher, and a heavy
batter. Bill Fife is a veteran from last
year's squad, and should Avin games
with consistency.
Jones will probably have first call for
shortstop, while Hargrove is slated for
an outfield position.
The rest of tlie team will have to be
built up from last year's subs and this
year’s jirospects.
CHAMPION OF HANDBALL
TOURNAMENT TO GET CUP
Come, all ye handball fans, and make
read}'. Glance into Mr. Charlie’s office
and feast your eyes on the new loving
cup to be given in the handball tourna
ment. This will be the first time in the
history of Greensboro High School that
there has ever been a handball tourna
ment, but Coach Park says that it will
not be the last.
At the opening of last semester the
handball courts were worked over and
put into condition for this year, but
only a few students are taking advan
tage of this chance to put themselves in
condition for the meet.
The next meet will be held as soon as
the weather will permit. No date has
been set but all parties interested in this
had better get in all the practice they
can within the next few days.

PROSPECTS LOOK
BRIGHT FOR TRACK
Homey an'd Whittington Both
Letter Men and Several of
Last Year’s Team Back.
Prospects of an all state track team
for this year are very good with B.
Homey and P. B. Whittington, letter
men of last year, and Brown, Glascock,
Phoenix, Burroughs, and Wimbish who
made the team last year, to help them in
forming the nucleus of this year’s team.
Coaches Aycock and Fordliam have
both been urging the boys to come out,
hut as yet they liave a squad of only
about fifteen. Boys who are too light for
other sports have a chance in track and
are urged to come out.
In “Plug'’ Plorney and Phoenix Ave
liave the two best half-milers in the
state, and Jones is developing fast into
a steady niiler. Glascock and Whitting
ton will no doubt do the hurdling again
tliis year, and they are going to be hard
to beat.
J'he team's greatest handicap will be
the loss of Hackney and Koenig, both
dash men. With the exception of Quate,
no men have yet reported for practice
of dash, although Shelton and Ridenhour
have planned to start practice next Aveek.
In tlie field events the team will be
as good as last year if not better, Avith
BroAvn, MJmbish, Conrad, Whittington,
Burroughs and MeadoAvs leading. Great
things are expected of BroAvn and Mead
ows. Although Brown didn’t get his letter
last year he made a very good shoAving in
every meet, and he is steadily iinjirov-
ing. Meadows, Avho held the South
Carolina state record for a short time,
is expected to stick the javelin in front
of all competitors. Although Wimbish
is busy at present practicing his play,
he and Conrad are expected to be in
shape to put the shot by the first meet,
March 27.
In Coaches Aycock and Fordham we
have two of the best coaches in the state.
Fordham, who Avas with the Carolina
track team three years, Avill take charge
of the field events while Aycock coaches
tlie runners. I.rast year Ave lost the state
track meet by one and two-thirds points,
but this year Coach Aycock is determined
to bring the cup back Avith him.
GREENSBORO WINS
FROM BURLINGTON
Final Score 27 to 14—Whole
Team Plays Excellent Ball;
Solomon is High Scorer.
It took exactly five minutes on the
night of February 11, for a little Avhirl-
wind to rise and blow over Burlington,
in the first championship game, by the
score of 27 to 14. After the visitors
scored the first goal the Watson Brothers
fed Arnold, Solomon, and Taylor, with
lightning passes to score 18 points in
the second quarter and sweep their op
ponents oft* their feet. The half ended
27 to 7, with G. H. S. on the big end
of the score.
The Greensboro boys Avorked as a unit,
and presented a smooth working (juint
tliat bids to go far in the state chamr
pionship. It Avould be almost impossible
to pick a star from the Greensboro
team, as the whole team played excel
lent ball after the first quarter. Solo
mon and Arnold were high scorers with
12 and 8 points respectively. After the
first lialf, numerous substitutes were
used b}' Coach Park, every man on the
squad getting a chance in the game.
The Burlington team fought desper
ately in the last half, but the lead was
too great to overcome. Jones was the
best man for Burlington.

of the Greensboro boys by his habit of
looking one way and passing another. He
gave the team several good points
Avhich they believe will serve them Avell

Mr. Taylor formerly played Avith the
Buffalo “Bulldogs,” Avho is one of the
best, if not the best, professional team
in the country. He is Avithout a doubt
the best player that has ever been seen
in Caldwell Gym. His visit is looked for-

playing with, or seeing a man of his
caliber is a special treat.
GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM

The girls basketball squad is in a
very pitiful condition. The poor girls
have been hobbling around the school as
though they Avere in their “last stages of
delapidation.”
Mary Tilley’s thumb will not permit
her to play in the game, and in the last
few games the team has missed her

N. C. HIGH SCHOOL
PRINCIPALS MEET
{Continued from page one)
The Saturday morning session was con
cluded Avith a discussion of high school
athletics by Charles W. Phillips. This
topic proved to be of very great interest.
The discussion pointed to the fact that
iiigh school principals more than any
other group can secure a higher plane of
athletic competition between the schools.
Closer supervision of schedules was a
point to Avhicli they gave great emphasis.
'I'he men present Avere opposed to the
rigid requirements of some rules Avhich
university authorities advance. The one-
year residence requirements for students
Avho Avish to enter into high school var
sity athletics was discussed and was
opposed. Another part of the rules re
quiring residence of parents for any
students Avho take part in contests be-
tAA'een the schools Avas discussed freely.
There Avas not any desire to do aAvay
Avith these rules, but the opinion Avas ex
pressed that good pupils should be given
the ojiportunity they deserve as much as
otliers Avho meet the demands.
The conference concluded here Satur
day morning. The principals decided to
hold their next annual meeting in Wil
mington, and they selected M. G. Little,
principal of the high school of that city,
as chairman of the group.

and is expected to be “on the floor” at

Marguerite Harrison and her hii) are
