G. H. S. will meet Ileidsville today
at H o’clock at Cone Park for the first
game of the Western Championship.
Coach Coletrane expects a hard fight,
bnt his eleven is in good condition.
The regular team will play with the
excei)tion of Burgess. When (t. II. S.
played Reidsville earlier in the season
the Purple Whirlwind won Avith a 9-0
score.
The winner of the G. 11. S.-Reids-
A'ille gaine will meet the winner of the
Lexington-High Point game, probably
next Friday. Lexington defeated Leaks-
ville October 28. The game with High
I’oint will be the second game of their
championship series. If the Purple
Whirlwind carries away honors from
Reidsville, they play either Lexington
at Cone Park, or High I’oint at High
Point.
The final possibilities are as follows:
Greensboro at High Point; Lexington
at Greensboro; Reidsville at High
Point; Reidsville at Lexington ; Reids
ville at Leaksville.
About the middle of November the
coaches will meet with E. R. Rankin
of the extension department of the Uni
versity of North Carolina to arrange
a further eliminafion schedule.

Greensboro added another victim her
her string of A'ictories Saturday, Octo
ber 2S, at Cone Park, when she
swamped Burlington Hi gridders 40
to 0.
Scoring got under way early in the
first quarter when Pete 'Wyrick crossed
the goal for the initial counter of the
afternoon’s fray. Bi-owns’ educated
toe added the extra point, when he
booted the ball squarely over the cross
bar. From this time on until the final
whistle sounded the seorekeeper’s pen
cil was kept busy marking up the va
rious and sundry Greensboro counters.
Wyrick, Ogburn, Cook, and Teague all
contributed to Burlington’s downfall.
Both Wyrick and Ogburn shoved the
ball across the goal for two touchdowns
each.
The afternoon’s encounter Avas de-
A'oid of features Avith it being merely
a case of scoring and more scoring on
the part of the Gate City lads. Coach
Coletrane ran in almost his entire
squad and the Avearers of the “Purple
and Gold SAvept doAvn the field in rare
form. At no time Avas the Greensboro
goal threatened.

ball and Pete Wyrick scored a touch-

third quarters neither of the teams
were able to gain much ground. In
the last part of the first quarter an
other touchdoAvn Avas made by Davant;
G. H. S. failed to kick goal.
In the last quarter the Greensboro
boys Avith their usual i)ep got aAvay
Avith the ball and Grubbs made a touch-
doAvn.
Wyrick Avas the oTitstanding star of
the game. In the third quarter he made
a ()0-yard run.

The World War Memorial Stadium
Avill be dedicated and opened on Ar
mistice Dity. Thursday, November 11.
The Memorial tablets on the entrance
to the stadium Avill be unA’eiled, and
Congressman Bulwinkle, of Gastonia,
Avill deliver the address.
The athletic dedication Avill take
place in the afternoon Avhen tAvo Guil
ford County football elevens, Guilford
College and High l*'oint Methodist l*rot-
estant College, Avill play their annual
game. It Avill be the biggest game of
the year, and so far this year the teams
are about evenly matched. The games
in the stadium Avill he sponsored by
the Henry K. Burtner Post of the
American Legion. An unusually large
croAvd is exj)ected to attend.
Part of the gate receipts Avill go to
the treasury of the Henry K. Burtner
Post, to be used in assisting former
serAUce men in securing Avork, as Avell
as aiding the AA'ork of the legion. The
2.52nd Coast Aartillery of the North
Carolina National Guard Avill parade,
and the Oak Ridge Cadet Band Avill
furnish the music.
About 05 G. H. S. girls have signed
up for this year. Mrs. Merrill Squires
of the Y. M. C. A., is instructor.
FRESHMEN DEFEAT

GOOD TEAMWORK SHOWN
The freshman girls defeated the
seniors, 1-0, Thursday. October 21, on
the Caldwell hockey field. After hard
fighting and good team Avork Gladys
Barber, of the freshman team, made
the only score. Barber and Hutchison
starred for the freshmen and on the
senior team Robinson did commendable
AVork.
The final game of the hockey series
Avas played betAveen the sophomores
and freshmen on Mclver field Friday,
October 22. Both teams Avere Avell
matched and the game Avas a hard-
fought one. In the last quarter GoodAvin
made the only goal.

for Avork. No girl may receive rcedit
for any stroke, diA'e, etc., but one time.
Section 2.—The total score in SAvim-
niing for strokes, dives, and life-saving
shall be 75 points.

1.—Secure at least eight consecutive

The soccer team of G. H. S. lost to
Winston-Salem 8-0 AVednesday, Nov.
8, on the Tavui City field. This game
Avas the second since the sport started
here. In the first game of the season,
tAvo days after the Greensboro boys had
started practice, the team played High
Point. Greensboro lost to High Point
by a score of 1 to 0. November 4 High
Point played a return game here.

talked about class and varsity basket
ball. She announced the class coaches

Hammond, freshmen.
After the joint meeting, the different
teams held class meetings. 'The senior
group elected Jane Harris their eap-
tain and Rebecca Webster Avill head
the junior squad.
'The coaches are looking forAA-ard to
a great season, as 188 girls Avill be out
for basketball; there are 38 juniors,
29 sophomores, 18 seniors, and .58 fresh
men out for the first meeting.
PHOENIX WINS SEVENTH
PLACE IN ANNUAL RACE
Clarence I’hoenix took seventh place
in the annual “cake-eaters” race at
Chapel Hill on October 29. The race
caused much interest throughout the
state Avith some tAvo hundred boys tak
ing part in the meet.
Phoenix Avas handicapped by not
being familiar Avith the course,' how-
eA^er, he Avas leading Bill Homey until
the last lap of the race Avhen Phoenix
Aveakeued and Homey passed him.
Cakes Avere aAvarded to the first 10
and a large caramel one fell to the lot
of I’hoenix. Rumors ha\'e it that the
cake Avas delicious, although it AAxas sat
upon and met AA'ith various other mis
haps on the road home.

Point boys put up a hard fight through

outplayed the High Point lads, as avus

The first score came in the second
(luarter Avhen Watson throAV a pass
from the 40-yard line to Henderson,
Avho, racing doAvn the field, caught the
ball on the five-yard line and carried it
across the goal. The next score came
after Burroughs gained 40 yards
around left end and the ball Avas car
ried up the field for 20 yards to another
score. A 25-yard run by Hargrove fea
tured in the scoring of the next touch-
doAA’ii. The run AA'as folloAA’ed by the
aerial attack when tAvo passes, Watson
to Grubbs, for 12 yards and Watson to
Rives, for 14 yards.
The game Avas especially interestiug
as the High Point lads did not cease
to fight until the final Avhlstle blew and
the punting of Ridge outclassed that
of the Greensboro backs. Kearns Avas
the principal ground-gainer for the
Furniture City.
