The meet will he held in both the morning and afternoon, at ten o’clock and two o’clock. Charlotte will not be entered this year, and Greensboro’s chance for win ning the meet are considered better than good. ’File squad center around Theron Itrown and Clarence Phoenix, Greens boro’s two largest point-winners. A. letter from I). R. flaworth, dean of men at Guilford, to Mr. Phillips, states: “I hope that your boys and girls will supiJort your team hath with num bers and with spirit.” A large crowd of G. H. S. students is ioxpected to turn out for the meet, Guilford being only six miles distant. G.H.S. TENNIS GAME IS INTERRUPTED BY RAIN The G. 11. S. tennis team, composed of .John Sockwell, Clyde Andrews, How ard Gardner and Joe Hendricks matched Glenn Sherman, Glenn Valentine, Garri son Reid, and Jack Pepper, the boys making up the Winston-Salem team, at Winston on March 31. Jupiter Pluyius interrupted the game. Fine playing was shown by both teams. John Sockwell and Clyde Andrews won the first and last set. Joe Hendricks and Howard Gardner won the first, were defeated in the second, and rained out in the third. ATKISSON IS MANAGER Clarence Phoenix was elected cniptain of the 1927 track team at a meeting of the team held on March 24th. OFinley Atkisson was elected manager and Macon Hrock- er assistant manager at the same iueeting. Clarence Phoenix is one of the best milers in the state and has been training all winter nnd hopes to break the record at the state ehampionsbip meet at Chapel Hill on April 14th, in which the ofRcial records are kept. This is bis first offiee on the track team. The hikers will go on hikes erery Fri day till the middle of May under the direction of Miss Rnth Reynolds. Miss Reynolds remarked, “Maybe on some special Friday there would be a sur- piise for the girls >vho went out. At the end of the year there will be an over-night hike for the ones wbo have gone twenty-five miles. So far this sea son the hiking has been a great suc cess and everyone has enjoyed the trips.” Saturday, March 24th, the girls walked to Ella Mae Barbour’s home in Sedgefield. They had music and later refreslunents were nerved to the girls. The girls rode home except three, who hiked home to ihave more miles to their credit. After losing the first iset they made a sensa tional rally, taking the second set, 6-0, and the next, 6-1. The summary of the game is as follows; Sockwell and Andrews defeated Jones and May 4-6; 6-0; 6-1. Sockwell, (G.) defeated Sharpe, (B.) 6-2; 6-1. May, (B.) defeated Andrews, (G.) tV2; 6-4. Gardner, (G.), defeated Jones, (B.) 6-8; 6-2; 6-0. Hendrix, (G.) defeated Jones, (B.) 8-6; 6-0. Charlotte High School won the aii- luaal interschoiaBtic track meet at Wake Forest, April 2, with 26 points. Greensboro won second place with 14 points. Wilmington followed close with 101 points and Roanoke Rapids with 10. Charlotte won for the second time the gold loving cup offered, and came in to permanent possession of it. Asheville High won the mile relay and the silver citj) offered for this event. Theron Brown, of Greensboro, won the huudred-dollar scholarship offered to the individual scoring the highest number of points, taking second place in the shot-put, first place in the dis- (!us throw, and third place in the jave lin. Phamix, of Greensboro, won the mile run in four minutes, 56 and 4-5 sec onds. FRESHMEN DEFEAT JUNIORS MARCH 30 Score 55 to 15—Game Lasted Five Innings—Much En thusiasm Shown GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP The junior baseball team was defeat ed by the freshmen, Wednesday after noon, March 30, by a score of 55 to 15. The game lasted for five innings. Both teams showed much enthusiasm for the game and their sportsmanship was commendable. The freshmen won by their hard hitting, beginning in the first inning and continuing throughout the entire game. Margaret Sockw^ell was elected man ager of the G. H. S. girls’ tennis teah March 31. About 25 girls met in Room 8 to sign up for tennis. Lydia Ballance is secretary for the coming season. Miss Bobbie Bayer, tennis coach, told the girls they would receive 20 points for 30 hours’ practice, or 10 points for 15 hours’ pra:Gtice. She alno read a let ter from Winston-Salem in which they said they want to compete with our team on April 29th or 30th there. Miss Bayer and the manager have not as yet idecided to answer the letter as they have not got a central court to practice on. They think they will be able to get the Galdwell courts for practice and the N. G. G. W. courts for tournaments. S. in ’24, broke the school, southern, and state records, April 1, by running two miles in nine minutes and fifty seconds. Gihsonville High School nine defeat ed G. H. S. at Gihsonville Tuesday, March 29. Errors in the third and fourth innings coupled with a sharp hattiug attack by the Gihsonville team practically lost the game for Greens boro. J'aylor started the game for the locals but gave way to Gardner in the third inning. The latter suffered a setback in the fourth and was pounded hard in the eighth. Miss Nellie Kate Dry talked to the girls interested in track, sKvimming and tennis Friday, April 1, in chapel. She told the sixty-nine girls present about the coining track meet to be held Friday, April 29, at Gone Park. Miss Dry said the girls could only enter in three of the following events: 50-yard dash; 70-yard dash ; hurdle; standing broad jump; running high jump ; javeliue throw ; discus throw ; relay, and the unknown relay. Duel la Walker was elected track manager and Louise Thacker assistant manager. Miss Dry explained the coming swim ming meet and also the district tourna ment which is to be held the first week in May. Slie says they hope to ob tain the Country Club courts to play on. Miss Ida Belle Moore announced the girls to come out for varsity baseball practice, and she met with them after the others were dismissed. After this, the Girls’ Monogram Club held a meeting. WINNERS’ SCORE IS 6-2 On Tuesday, April 5,, the Greensboro High baseball men defeated the Salis bury High outfit by a score of 6-2. The game took place in the city of the lat ter team. All scoring was done before the fifth frame, and after that inning both teams settled down to conventional baseball. Wyatt Taylor pitched a fine game for Greensboro, striking out 10 of the 29 batters who faced him and issu ing only oue free pass. He allowed only four hits. Pete Wyrick led his teammates in the scoring, crossing the plate twice. Vie Jones laid out a pretty three-bagger to score Wyrick in the first frame. Score by innings : R. G. H. Greensboro is offering Disiti’i'Ct Five a track meet, which will probahly he held the last Friday in April, either at the Stadium or Gone Park. Repre sentatives from Winston-Salem, IJigh Point, Burlington, and Reidsville will participate. The events that will be offered are: fifty-yard dash, hurdles, javelin and discus throw, and two re lays, one of which is the “unknown” re lay. A girl may enter four events, hut it is recommended that she enter only three. In 1920 Greensboro won the track meet with 39 points and Winston-Salem second with 21 points. Greensboro won six first places, two second places, and four third places. Those winning first places were Josephine Abernathy, Dael- la Walker, and Ruth Watson. In 1925 Greensboro won the meet held at Winston-Salem. W. G. A. Friday morning, March 24th. The girls have been going to practice regularly on Mondays and Thursdays. Miss Irv ing says that she hopes that they will all be ready to pass the test in a few weeks. The following girls took part: Lizzie, Adams Powers, Kate tiarrison, Mar garet Bowles, Elizabeth Wood, Rachel Lipscomb, Douglass Long, Lily Staple- ton, and Virginia Brown. GIRLS’ VARSITY TEAM COMMENCES PRACTICE The state high school record for the one mile relay was broken Saturday; in a dual track meet between Asheville! High and Bingham High School. “We will have a good varsity team this year,” said Miss Ida Belle Moore, coach of girls’ baseball in G. H. S., to a High Life reporter. The championship series will extend from April 8 to May 14. The schedule, which is being arranged by Winston- Salem, has not been completed yet. The regular varsity team was or ganized Friday, April 1, at chapel pe riod, with Miss Moore presiding over the meeting. “G. H. S. 1927 tennis team is going to he a good one, “Red” Routh, tennis coach, said in an interview Tuesday, March 29. The team will be composed of John Sockwell, Clyde Andrews, John Gillespie and Joe Hendricks. The elimination contest was held at the Chnrch-by-the-Side-of-the-Road. John Sockwell, Clyde Andrews, John Gillespie, Joe Hendricks, Howard Gard ner, George Stone, and Ed Stainback tried out. “The hopes are running high of hav ing a championship team. John Sock well, with his height, will be a big as set to the team. Clyde Andrews is a steady player and when paired with John Sockwell we have a fine pair of doubles. C. ANDREWS ELECTED AS TENNIS TEAM MANAGER Mr. A. P. Routh Stated That There Mould Not Be a Captain For This Year Clyde Andrews was elected manager of the tennis team for the year of 1927 on Tuesday, March 29th. “Red” Routh, tennis coach, stated that there would not be a captain for the team. This is Cliide Andrews’ second year on the team. During these years he has been a big asset to the team. His playing with John Sockwell will give the team a great chance for the cham pionship doubles in the state. Morris Wins Manager’s “G’ Boyd Morris was the only freshman on the basketball team to win a “G.” He was awarded his “G” March 14, and a small “M” to put inside of his' “G” for his services as manager of the team. According to Mr, A. P. Routh, he is a very good worker. SOPHOMORES WIN BASEBALL GAME MAR. 28 Tlie sophomores met the seniors in a baseball game played JMarch 29th. They had the best end of the fray with a score of 38 against 15 for the seniors. Mr. M’^illiam Blair unipired. The star players for the sophs were Ballance and Hutchinson; for the sen iors, Young and Davidson.
