The bases were loaded and Captain “Pete’’ Wyrick banged out a triple. Three more runs were added and things were quet until the seventh when two more tallies were added. Veteran Will Lead Team Dur ing Season 1927-28—Chosen at Party at Parks Home Wednesday, April 20, Wyatt Taylor was elected captain of the basketball team for 1927-1928 at a party given for the basketball sciuad by Coach TI. W. Park at his home on Madison Avenue. Several contests were held. Herman Gardner won the balloon race and was voted the sheik of the party. Pete TVy- rick was chosen the best player; big- gesT bone, John Sock well; best shot, Wyatt Taylor. Richard Cox won the basketball throw and Ned Lipscomb the arrow shot. Mr. I’ark presented the team with the book, “It Can Re Done,” and in turn the team gave the coach a knife and chain. Johnny Turner was pitching in superb form and let the Pointers down with only one hit, while the Pur ple Whirlwind was knocking Lapp and Smith all over the lot, garnering twelve hits off both of them. Lapp lasted un til the fifth when Coach Marlette sent in Smith to try to check Greensboro’s onslaught and succeeded in holding the home team to one run and three hits. The infield worked like clockwork; no errors were chalked up against the whole team. This was caused by two members of the track squad running in front of Gardner and confusing him (the cinder track runs through right field). In the first inning Wyrick led off with a triple, but he could not be brought in. Turner opened up the works in the second with a short single to right held. Cox tripled and Turner came in. Again the team could not bring the man in. Two more came in the third inning and three runs were added in the fourtln Things quieted down till the eighth when Greensboro registered again. Tay lor started the game for Greensboro, but Gardner relieved him in the seventh inning. The local scored three runs i nthe ninth with two men out to win the game. S. won their second ball game of the week Tuesday afternoon, April 12, by defeating Reidsville High with a count of 3 to 2. Wyatt Taylor pitched a great game until the ninth when by passing one man and allowing two sin gles find fi triple, two runs came in. This tied the score but Wyrick, after being walked, stole second and finally by two wild pitches came home to end the game. Smith, the Reidsville hurler, also pitched a good game, allowing eight hits and several of these were errors. Score by innings; R. The main feature will be a horseshoe contest. They will also have plays, games and will proba bly go swimming. Greensboro Mono gram club girls are: Marian Curtis, Marian Geogheghan, Virginia Douglas, Carl Lane Browne, Rose Goodwin, Ra chel Lipscomb, Jane Harris, Minnie Herman, Evelyn Rives. TRACK TEAM THIRD TIME H. Point, W.-Salem, Friendship, Burlington, Thomasville Trail Winners LOSE AFTER STRUGGLE Held at Guilford April 9 — 42 to 36 Score—Meet Held as Part of High School Day Charlotte High won the State High School track meet, piling up 45 points, Greensboro High won second with 20 points, Asheville third, with 13 points, and Wilmington, fourth, with 11 points. Seven state records were shattered, Neiman, of Charlotte, being responsible for two, the broad .iump and pole vault. Reid, also of Charlotte, raised the high jump. Edmundson, of Roanoke Rapids nearly threw the javelin away, break ing the former record by ten feet. Theron Brown, of G. LI. S., came with in three feet of the Southern Collegiate record when he hurled the discus 124 feet, 1 1-2 inches. Captain Clarence Phoenix lowered the record for the half mile run after he had come within three seconds of the record for the mile run. The half mile drew the stands to their feet for the whole race. Phoe nix, of Greensboro, and Carbine, of Charlotte, led the field by several yards. Carbine was pushing Phoenix as he broke the tape, being just about a foot behind. In the mile run no one even came near Phoenix after the first lap. It was a guess as to how big the lead would be. The Asheville relay team went into the race with the determination to make a new state record and they did it. Each man steadily increased the lead and Asheville came in far ahead of anyone else. Besides taking first in the discus, Theron Brown took second in the shot and third in the javelin, accounting for ten points altogether. NET TEAM ELIMINATED IN MEET AT CHAPEL HILL John Sock well and Clyde Andrews with Howard Gardner as alternate, rep resented G. H. S. at the 14th annual state high school tennis tournament held in Chapel Hill April 14th and 15th. Sockwell and Andrews went to the semi-finals but were put out there. Charlotte won both the doubles and the singles titles in the meet. An event of the spring is a girls’ track meet. It will probably be spon sored by High Point College. PREPARE TENNIS COURTS AT MEMORIAL STADIUM Can Have Court Ready for Play by End of Week—No Court Regulations Have Yet Been Made Tennis courts are being rapidly pre pared at the Memorial Stadium, and D. O. Fish, the landscape architect, stated that probably two courts would be ready for play by the week-end. The ground has been rolled in the first section of the four courts but they need additional rolling. This work can be accomplished this week if fair weather prevails. Posts for the nets have been erected, but all the nets have not arrived. The officials are waiting to see with what popularity the four courts meet before rushing work on the others. No regulations governing the courts have been made, but they will be drawn up at an early date. No fee is expected to be charged for the use of the courts, and whoever arrives first will have the privilege of playing. The fifth annual track meet between the grammar schools of Greensboro will be held Saturday, April 23, at the World War Memorial stadium in con nection with Boys’ Week. Over 1,000 entrants are expected, according to Herbert W. Park of the local schools. STATE TRACK MEET WON BY CHARLOTTE Charlotte Wins With 45 Points. This time defeat came after a desperate struggle in the track meet sponsored by Guilford College as part of high school da.y which wtis held at Guilford April 9, when she was nosed out by a 42 to 36 score. WINS TENNIS ON BURLINGTON COURTS Greensboro High School’s Tennis Team Takes Five of Six Matches Played in Burlington The Greensboro High School tennis team took five of the six matches played in. Burlington, Monday, April 11. The sixth match had to be called on account of darkness. The doubles were the most interest ing feature. Andrews and Sockwell, Greensboro, won over the Burlington team, Vernon and Ma.y. Another close match was the Sockwell-Sharpe con test, with Sockwell winning again. The other matches and results were: Gard ner and Hendrix, Greensboro, defeated May, Burlington; Hendrix, Greensboro, won from Mebane. The sixth match between Andrews and Vernon was not finished. GIRLS’ BASEBALL TEAM TRIMS HIGH POINT NINE With a score of 16-8, the girls’ base ball team of Greensboro High defeated the High Point girls on the Aycock field Tuesday, Axndl 19. This was the first game that the Greensboro team had played in the championship series.
