The Purple Whirhvliids will meet the Salisbury eleven at Memorial Stadium this afternoon at 3:30 in a crucial battle for the Western Conference champiouship. The Salisbury team has always been a dangeorous rival to Greensboro and this year the squad is considered to bi extra strong. The Greensboro eleTOii is ready for the visiting squad and it is sure to be a real battle. This year the Sallsbur.v team is greatly strengthened having five letter- men returning in the backfle'.d and five of the regular linemen retunung. Last year Salisbury tied with Wliistoa-Sa- lem for second place In the conference standing of Class A. This year in the first two games Salisbury has come out with the big end of the score winning from Mocksville eleven 55-0. The Ra leigh eleven went down to Salisbury by the score of 19-0. Last Friday the Gastonia eleven tied Salisbury at and Gastonia beat Asheville earlier ii the season. The loss of Captain Saleeby In the line and Barnhardt in the backfleld will not hurt Salisbury a great deal as there are lettermen to replace them. The total number of lettermen returning to the squad this year exceeds that of any team in the Western conference. Salisbury comes hero with a clean slate having won two games and tied one. Greensboro has won two and one winning the first two games of the season against Sanford and Reidsville, and losing to Charlotte in their third start last Friday. Last year Greensboro tied Salisbury 6-6, Coach Belding has announced his team as ready for the invaders and he is putting the squad through daily workouts and scrimmages. Harry Phil lips, injured in the Reidsville game and not able to get in the Charlotte game, will probably be ready for Salis bury. Arnold Demiisey, who suffered a badly wrenched foot in scrimmage just before the Reidsville game, will probable return to the lineup in time for Friday's game; and Ned Tlior- burn, Injured at tbe same time Demp sey was, will probably be ready also. All three of the above are linesmen, Oka Hester, hefty center, looks like a l)ossible successor of Li]isconib at the center position. SPARKS FROM THE GRIDIRON HARRIERS LOSE THEIR OPENING CONTEST Guilford Prosh Take Big End of 28-27 Score; Koury Best Runner for Local Cross Country Team. Coach A. Paul Bouth’s cross country harriers lost their first decision of the year to the Guilford College Frosh at Gulford by the score of 28-27, over a two-mile course. The Guilford team, led by Captain Newlin, had two first places. Newlin came in ahead with 12:14 and Venable s first among the scored men, coming with 13:24. Koury, leading Greens boro runner, came in next, followed by Lovin and Rochelle, both of Greens boro. Venable is a one-arm runner and the leading man for Guilford in practices held so far made three and one-half miles in 20 minutes. Koury has proved to be the leading Greensboro runner, having led the field practice runs with his best time be ing a littlo under 12 minutes for two The order at the finish follows: Ven- abe (G), Koury (H. S.), Lovin (H. S.), Rochelle (II. S.), Coble (G.), Durham (G), Allen (G.), Poindexter (G.), Lang ley (H. S.), Miller (H. S.) Montgomery (H, S.), Douglas (H. S.) to his 31-yard line. Dickerson jumped into the air and shot a pass like a bul let to Terrill, who, with an open field before him, is overtaken by Burroughs and down with a flying tackle on Greensboro’s 32-yard line. Dickerson went around left end to the 21-yard line the game ended. Summary Greensboro 9) Pos. Winston-Salem is supposed to have a stronger team than last year but did not prove it against Madison. They only defeated Madison by a 14 to 0 count. The Reidsville team defeated Madison 42 to 0. Gastonia Going Strong Gastonia defeated Asheville, who has lost both games they have played, by the count of 12 to 6. This was the first game in the con ference and it looks as though Gastonia might have a strong team. Ends Outstanding High Point and Lexington fought four quarters to a 0 to 0 dead lock. The ends for High Point were the only outstanding players of the game. Win by Close Margin Greensboro took a hard-fought game from the Reidsville boys by the count of 9 to 6. Reidsville had run up over one hundred points on the other two teams they played. They were state champions in their class last year. Defeat Champions Salisbury has chalked up another victory. They seem to have a 1931 grid-machine. Almost as strong as their 1930 team when they de feated the Raleigh high champions of the east. With our Charlotte game behind us we should fight all the harder. Let’s score more than one old touchdown. Remember how we scored a touchdown only to be called back supposedly for stepping out of bounds and ended up with a 6-6 score ? Come on let’s get that old spirit of G. H. S. and score, score, score! The Charlotte Wildcats clawed the Columbia eleven for a 22 to 0 victory to get revenge for the 7 to 0 defeat handed them by the South Carolinians last year. Speaking of sports, let’s look back a few years and try to recall the day when some of these fellows used to carry the old pigskin for G. II. S., and who were the originators of the title “The Purple Whirl wind,” Here they are, think about them, Jimmy Maus, Frank Good win, Pred Burroughs, Bill Teague, Pete Wyriek, “Red” Goodwin, Boyd Morris, Charlie Shaffer, “Beany” Curtis, Harris Ogburn, and others who have gone on to college and are carrying on the career that they started on the old high school field. And let’s also think about those we have now who are starting the same kind of a career. Here they are, Jack Burroughs, “Red” Riley, and Ed Lee. How about it readers, aren't they on their way to fame ? The reserve team has been playing liard this year, There, are one or two boys who have been hurt everyday. They had to play Asheboro when the best of the reserves were hurt and could not play. Goodwin, the boy who scored the touchdown against High Point in the first game, was not able to play on ^count of a sprained arm. Amos Shelton, the best center on the reserves, had a sprained hand and could not get into the game. Nowlin, another good back on the reserves, had a hip hurt but played in part of the game. Jimmy Jenkins pulled a muscle in his leg and can hardly walk. Some of our last year’s football stars are making big hits on the college freshmen teams in the state. Down at Carolina “Shorty” Shaffer is making a bid for the quarterback position. Harris Ogburn, G. H. S. plunging halfback is playing a great game at Carolina. A1 Avery, mentioned for “all-state” guard in high school, is showing up well in the line. Great things are being expected of this trio in the future. Over at Davidson, Lee Vanstory and Fritz Byerly are making a good impression. Down at State college, Glen Goodwin, the red-headed flash from Gv H. S., is the most promising halfback ever to come to State. Everyone at State is watching his movements. Coach Smith thinks Red will be a second Jack McDowall. Last Friday night “Red” ran wild against Oak Ridge and was by far the most outstand ing star of the game. Great things are expected of “Red” down at State. Keep it up “ Red ’ ’! GOODWIN SCORES FOR RESERVE TEAM Five More Minutes to Play When Ball Placed Over Line. BOREN SHOWS GOOD WORK 'The Greensboro liigh school reserves won a victory over the High Point re serves after battling for three quarters on the local athletic field when Philip Goodwin intercepted a Pointer pass and raced (iO yards for the lone touchdown, making the score 6-0. The game was air-tight from the first histle ;intil the lost and neither team showed a great advantage over the other. Goodwin's run was the only play that came near being a touchdown. The locals looked fairly good in the line and the backfleld, and some of the players show good promises as varsity aterial. Goodwin's touchdown came in the last quarter after the two teams had waged an even fight during the first two quarters. Sprye, playing his first year as a I’oiuter quarterback, called for a pass and Goodwin intercepted it neatly on his own 40-yar(l marker and sprinted through the High Point eleven for »i0 yards to put Greensboro In the lead 0-0. The try fur extra point was missed. In the Greensboro line Knight and Hodges at guard and Gibson at tackle played a good game, while Boren and Goodwin starred in the backfleld. ChessoD and Rudter, linemen, and Har ris, fullback were outstanding in the Pointer line-up. Soccer Equipment Arrive® Soccer equipment has arrived at last. Miss Robinson has announced that the soccer team will play other teams, in town and out of town. The first prac tice was held on the afternoon of Wednesday, the 7th, A large number of girls attended and. all have said that they are coming back.
